research
Professor Chan is a clinician scientist committed to translate evidence to practice and develop novel solutions for unmet needs. In the early 1990s, motivated by the observation of high prevalence of young-onset type 2 diabetes and renal disease, she set up the Hong Kong Diabetes Registry and multiple cohorts to define the epidemiology of diabetes in Chinese populations. These prospective cohorts have laid the foundation for an overarching program to use a multiomic approach to discover genetic variants of diabetes and its complications for personalized care. She is currently a member of an NIH funded Global Consortium to discover causal genes in type 2 diabetes in a multi-ethnic population.
Being one of the first Asian investigators involved in large scale multicenter studies in diabetes since 1990s, she has established the CUHK Diabetes Clinical Trial Centre which is one of the most active units in the region. She is a steering committee member of multicenter clinical trials including the ORIENT, EASIE, EXSCEL, ACE to study the effects of novel compounds on clinical outcomes in diabetes. Inspired by the low event rates within a clinical trial setting, in 2007, she founded the Asia Diabetes Foundation (www.adf.org.hk) to develop the first web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program which uses logistics, collaborative care and information technology to promote quality improvement and collaborative research, now implemented in 11 Asian countries.
She has co-authored in 500 peer-reviewed articles, including editorials and commentaries, and 20 book chapters with over 10,000 citations. In 2009, she received the Chinese Women Physicians Association Intercontinental Innovation Award under the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Through public private partnerships, she has successfully translated these knowledge to improve chronic/diabetes care for which the CUHK-PWH Diabetes Care and Research Team was selected as an International Diabetes Federation Centre of Education (www.idfce-hk.org) in 2011 for their commitment to use professional education and research to change practice and influence policy.
