Abundant historical references are great advantage in the research field of past global changes in China. However, in the early period of the Medieval Warm Period, there is still room for further exploration of objective and high confidence phenological information in Eastern China. In order to fill in this gap, we extracted 38 peony(Paeonia suffruticosa) flower appreciation dates from five kind of historical documents, during 981~1040 A.D., around Kaifeng(34.80°N, 114.32°E) and Luoyang(34.68°N, 112.44°E) in Henan Province. On the basis of the panel data model reflecting the quantitative relationship between spring temperatures and peony full-bloom dates, full-bloom-date variations of peony in Kaifeng at that time were reconstructed. This reconstructed sequence was analyzed by use of the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Theil-Sen estimator, Mann-Kendall trend test, and the FFT low-pass filter smoothing. The sequence was also compared with other literature evidences and temperature reconstruction series in China.
The analysis showed:(1) The mean full-bloom date in Kaifeng during 981~1040 A.D. was April 21, 1.0 day earlier than the date in 1951~1980 A.D., indicating that the climate in Kaifeng at that time was a little bit warmer than at present. (2) The variation amplitude of full-bloom dates of peony in Kaifeng at that time was between April 11 and April 30, which were very close to the same index at present. (3) This peony full-bloom-date series showed an insignificant advancing trend of 0.4 days/10 a, indicating that the warming at that time was not obvious. (4) Inter-decadal variations of this series could be divided into four phases, including 981~994 A.D., 995~1016 A.D., 1017~1030 A.D. and 1031~1040 A.D., whose mean full-bloom dates was 1.6 days later, 2.8 days earlier, 2.9 days later and 6.0 days earlier than that at present, respectively. (5) The series agrees very well with other multi-category document evidences and temperature reconstruction series, but there are still some differences between them on the climate conditions of the above four sub-periods.
This result provides an important basis for the future integrated reconstruction of an archives-based reconstruction of climate series in Eastern China during the Medieval Warm Period, with a longer time and less uncertainty in the temperature variation. Moreover, it is helpful for a better understanding of the relationship between climate changes and socio-economic fluctuations at that time.
