1935年7月生于湖南长沙。北京师范大学认知神经科学与学习国家重点实验室、脑与认知科学研究院教授。2011年10月退休。曾任北京师范大学心理系系主任，中国心理学会常务理事，普通和实验心理专业委员会主任，心理学报副主编，教育部心理学教学指导委员会副主任。
荣誉称号：全国优秀教师，北京市优秀教师
奖励：教育部科学与技术进步重大贡献一等奖，北京市哲学社会科学优秀成果一等奖（5次）。国家级优秀教育教学成果二等奖（2次），北京市教育教学优秀成果一等奖（2次）。全国百篇优秀博士论文指导教师奖。享受国务院特殊津贴。
著作：《认知心理学》、《汉语认知研究》、《汉语认知研究-从认知科学到认知神经科学》、《汉语儿童语言发展与促进》、《基础心理学书系》、《普通心理学》
研究兴趣：汉语认知及其神经机制。包括：背腹侧通路在汉语字词识别中的作用、情绪和注意对词汇识别的调节作用、汉字学习及其迁移的神经基础、语言障碍（口吃、阅读障碍和听力缺失）的神经机制等。
