Research InterestsMy research is in built environment design policy and urban governance, specifically on the creation and communication of value of and by design. By studying instruments for everyday governing as tools for intervening in physical and institutional configurations, my work reframes designing as an act of value redistribution in the city.
I am currently working on:
adapting and testing established value-based management tools for practical public space governance.a comparative study of public space as an urban service in Europe and Asiadeveloping design as a research methodology which can link teaching, research, practice and community engagement.
Keywords: public space management, urban design as governance, value and urban design, planning evaluation, political communication in planning and built environment decision-making
I trained as an architect at Cambridge and the Architectural Association, and completed a PhD in Planning at University College London. Before joining City University of Hong Kong in 2018, I worked for over fifteen years, across university, government, private and NGO sectors in the UK. Highlights include: producing advocacy research for the UK government on the case for private sector investment in the public good of better design, advising the Government on designing performance measures for the UK planning system, building business cases for design review as a nation-wide public service, and providing urban design training and training tools for non-designers. I was Senior Research Fellow at the Bartlett, University College London, and later, Programme Director of the Cardiff University MA Urban Design, where I taught urban design research methods and led the research-based design thesis Project. For a number of years, I chaired the UK Urban Design Group Book Award panel of judges. I have also served on peer reviewed and professional journal editorial panels.
