Abstract:Microplastic pollution has become a global environmental issue. Besides the direct toxicity of microplastics to marine organisms, the additives in microplastic such as phthalate, bisphenol A, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, can leach from the plastics and cause toxicity to the organisms. Moreover, microplastics can result in combined toxicological effect to marine organisms due to interactions between microplastics and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Therefore, this paper summarized the combined effect of microplastics and POPs in marine environment. The results showed that polystyrene derived microplastic can adsorb polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and organochlorine pesticides (such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) in seawater, resulting in bioaccumulation of these additives in marine organisms and posing risks to human health. Furthermore, more studies are needed to understand the combined toxicological effect of microplastics and pesticides in oceans.
