Professor Stephen Lau was born in Hong Kong, studied at The University of Hong Kong (BA(AS), BArch) and The University of London (MSc in Architecture – Environmental Design & Engineering). He has taught architectural design and environmental controls, and supervised PhD students at HKU, where he received the University Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award and was named a University-Wide Top Researcher in the discipline of Humanities for three consecutive years.
At the Faculty of Architecture, Professor Lau has served as Associate Dean for three terms; Chair of the PhD Committee at both Faculty and Department levels; and Admission Tutor for the BArch and MArch programmes. As Principal Investigator, he has completed 60 internal and external funded research projects. He was Primary Supervisor for 20 PhD students, two MPhil students, and seven Postdoctoral Fellows.
In 2015-19, Professor Lau joined the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore as a Professor, Deputy Head of Research, Head of the Design Technology and Sustainability Research & Teaching Group, Chair of the Center of Advanced Study in Architecture (CASA), and Chair of the Architecture PhD programme. He had also been a Visiting Professor at the Department of Geo-sciences and Spatial Planning of Utrecht University; Honorary Professor of Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Soochow, Southwest, Tongji and Wuhan Universities; Visiting Senior Research Fellow at UNSW Australia.
Professor Lau is a Registered Architect, Acoustician, and Lighting Designer. He is proficient in LEED, BREEAM, and BEAM. He is a Carbon Auditor, China GBL Assessor, and Vice Chair of the China GBC – Hong Kong Chapter. In recent years, he has contributed to the drafting of China National Standards, including the new standard for Architectural Acoustics (50118-2010); and two new standards for green building certification: Eco-district and Green Campus (2017, 2018). He was also joint leader of a technical study on the Validation of National Standard GB by ISO Standard for Daylight Control at the Artificial Island Entrances/Exits of the Zhuhai-Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macau Bridge.
