Introduction Thomas Chung is Associate Professor at School of Architecture, CUHK. His current research is driven by the regenerative approach to include countryside conservation, co-creative place-making and design for well-being. Ongoing projects on rural revitalization and co-creative conservation range from competitive grants and government funding to research consultancies and design projects.
Thomas’ internationally recognised multiple award-wining projects Value Farm (2013) and Floating Fields (2015) fuse ecological design, productive landscape with socially innovative public space.
Since 2008, Thomas has been active in curating, exhibiting and steering the Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture in Hong Kong and Shenzhen (UABB). In 2018, Thomas co-curated the prestigious Venice International Biennale Hong Kong Exhibition. Currently, Thomas serves on the Hong Kong Architecture Centre Board of Directors (2009-2015, 2021-) and is Chief Editor for the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Journal.
From 2008-2014, Thomas researched the urban metabolism of multi-scalar fabric by conducting typo-morphological baseline studies on Hong Kong’s inner-city districts (Central District, Sheung Wan, Shau Kei Wan) and interpretive studies in urban cultural representations. Since 2014, Thomas has combined Thesis and Master design studios and courses with research that focuses on urban-rural settlements and landscape with ecological design. Hong Kong’s New Territories have been studied to explore village revitalization, regenerative development approaches and innovative conservation strategies.
