Introduction Stan Fung is Associate Professor and Director of the MPhil-PhD programme in the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has previously held teaching positions in the University of Adelaide, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of New South Wales. As a researcher, Professor Fung has published widely on Australian architecture, contemporary Chinese architecture and Chinese garden history. His work has been supported by grants from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange in Taipei, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Architecture in Chicago and the Ian Potter Foundation in Melbourne. He currently holds a GRF grant from the University Grants Council in Hong Kong.
Past PhD students include Charles Rice (now Professor of Architecture in the University of Technology, Sydney), Paul Hogben (now Senior Lecturer in the University of New South Wales), James Curry (Lecturer in the University of Adelaide) and Hamid Rad (Researcher in Iranology, Beheshti University, Tehran). Stan has also served on doctoral committees at McGill University and in the Alexandria Center of Virginia Polytechnic & State University. Current research students and their topics are: Lyu Ruijie (the residential architecture of Neutra), Chan Ching Kan (issues of architectural identity in Hong Kong), Chen Jun (contemporary Chinese architecture), Liu Chang (Gardens of the Song dynasty) and Li Yuke (soundscapes in Chinese gardens). Prospective research students are welcome to discuss their interests with Professor Fung. Students with the following attributes are especially welcome: a high level of English-language ability, visual acuity, an ability to position oneself in a broad literature, and, for those working with Chinese sources, good sinological skills.
