Abstract:Air quality has certain effect on the health of passengers and staff in subway stations. At currently, the mechanical ventilation system in subway stations was the only active way to control air particulate content in its public area. In order to reveal performance of the mechanical ventilation system on controlling particulate matter concentration, on-site measurements have been conducted in the pubic area of a subway station with platform screen doors. The results showed that the mechanical ventilation system had weak effect on control the overall particulate matter concentration of the public area. Clear air provided by the mechanical ventilation system could not significantly ameliorate the particulate matter concentration of the public area, which only accouted for 5% of the total ventilation rate for the public area. There was limited difference of particulate matter concentration among the outdoor, hall and platform, which was less than 10 μg·m?3. Considerable infiltration through entrances of the subway station could guarantee enough ventilation between inside and outside of the station. Therefore, the shut-down of the mechanical ventilation system doesn’t significantly elevate particulate matter concentration in the public area. Key words:air particulate matter/ subway station/ mechanical ventilation system/ infiltration.
