个人简介
I am Module Convenor for the Introduction to Information Technology course (ITIT), team leader for Coaching and Support (CAS), and a former member of the Online Materials Development team (OMD). As team leader for CAS, I am responsible for support material, workshops and advising for all first year students. CAS won the Lord Dearing Award and the Vice Chancellor's medal in 2019. I was Campus Senior Tutor from 2017 to 2019 responsible for university-wide pastoral care provision. I was academic lead for the Student Online Induction programme (2017-18). From 2015-2016, I was Preliminary Year Student Support Officer with responsibility for the Personal Tutorial system, the Learning Community Forum, and represented CELE on the Senior Tutor Network.
I have researched the relationship between attendance, grades and pass rates and presented on this at the 2016 Teaching and Learning conference at UNNC and the 2017 InForm conference in Malaysia. I have also researched student adaptation to UNNC and presented on this topic at the 2019 InForm conference in Reading, UK. I have also published on the topic of Students as Change Agents and have a publication pending on the topic of Recognition and Response to Students at Risk of Failure.
In the Centre for English Language Education, I have taught on a range of Preliminary Year, Pre-Master’s and Pre-Sessional courses and was responsible for the introduction of a video and quiz on academic integrity. I was responsible for the development of the Nottingham Reading Scheme, creating a Nottingham Advantage Award for extensive reading, and for sending students to international conferences in the UK and Japan. I have been involved in several coaching initiatives at UNNC, two of which won grants from the university.
I have taught English in Sudan, Portugal, China, Japan and the UK. I was the co-ordinator of a team-teaching project in Tokyo for 4 years, and the Director of two British Council Summer Schools. I have also worked as a primary school teacher. Before joining UNNC, I worked for Glasgow University where one of my duties was responsibility for language support for students on the Dumfries Campus.
At undergraduate level, I have taught courses in Linguistics, English Dialects, Sociolinguistics, Cross-Cultural Communication, Phonetics and Phonology, Assessment and Testing along with Language Skills. In Master’s degree pre-sessional courses, I specialised in English for Medical and Biological Sciences, though I have also taught English for Engineers, and English for Business Students. At post-graduate level, I have been partly responsible for the development and teaching of short-term advanced academic writing skills courses.
In my other life, I have also jointly run a 4-star guest house and worked as a postman, barman, agricultural labourer, tractor driver and industrial cleaner.
I am married with two adult daughters was lucky enough to have the opportunity to look after a third daughter temporarily.
