科研方向

1. Genetic Control of Seed Development.

By using theRobertson’s Mutators as mutagens, weisolated many seed development mutants in maize. These mutantsreflect a set of key genes that play important roles in seeddevelopment. By cloning these genes through forward genetics andelucidating their molecular functions, we aim to understand themechanism by which a seed forms from double fertilization to dormancy. As seeddevelopment is closely related to cereal production, weselectively exploit the potential of some genes in crop improvement.



2. Provitamin A Nutrition Accumulation in Crop Seeds.

Provitamin A isthe precursor of Vitamin A, an essential nutrient for human health.However, human cannot synthesize Provitamin A; leaving dietary intake theonly choice. Enriching Provitamin A cereals becomes a promising means toimprove cereal nutrition. The goal of this study is to understand themechanism of provitamin A accumulation by studying the biosynthesis anddegradation.



3. Regulation of Abscisic Acid Biosynthesis.

ABA plays a keyrole in seed dormancy and plant responses to various environmental stresses. Weare interested in understanding the regulation of ABA biosynthesis, inparticular, the question how the plant senses stresses and initiates thetranscription of the NCED/Vp14 genes.
