课程内容简介(英文)

This course serves as an introductory solid state physics course for graduate students or seniors with an engineering background to conduct research in the area of electronics, material science, optics, nanoscience and technology. It covers the general topics in solid state physics, including lattice structure, lattice vibration, phonon, electron energy bands, electron transport; photon transport, and optical property of solids. In addition, it will introduce simulation methods and tools to model the thermal, electrical, and optical properties of solids and energy transport in solids.

教学大纲

Teaching Contents and Syllabus:Course contents: 1) Basic concepts: introduction to quantum mechanics and statistical dynamics; crystal structure; reciprocal lattice; chemical bonding2) Thermal property of solids: phonons; heat capacity; thermal conductivity; phonon transport and scattering; introduction to lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics 3) Electric property of solids: free electron gas; tight-binding model; band structure; electron heat capacity; metal; semiconductor; electron transport and scattering; introduction to first-principles simulations 4) Optical property of solids: free photon gas (blackbody radiation); photon transport; light-material interaction; introduction to numerical electromagnetics 5) Selected topics on frontier engineering research: including but not limited to photovoltaics and thermoelectrics.
