Investment bankers play an important role in facilitating saving and investment in a financial system. This course provides a broad overview of this role of investment banking. In particular topics will include the functions performed by investment banks and the manner in which these activities are carried out. Among those functions are the concepts of origination, syndication, distribution, and valuation of security issues. Topics will also include financial innovation and advanced financing instruments. The attention will be given to the clients of investment banks as well as to the banks themselves, and to the inherent tensions and potential conflicts between the two.
