  Abstract:
Experiments using soft x-rays (around 400 to 1000eV) is normally considered to require vacuum condition because of strong absorption by oxygen and nitrogen molecules in air. However, owing to recent developments of experimental apparatus and technique, soft x-ray spectroscopy is becoming one of a choice for experimental study of samples under atmospheric pressure. Since x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy are known as a direct methods to observe valence electronic state, these method will provide electronic structure which is important for broad fields of science including chemistry.
In the talk, soft x-ray studies concerning liquids at SPring-8 BL17SU will be introduced in detail from developments of experimental apparatus. The study was started around 10 years ago by developing liquid flow cell using ultra-thin (~150nm) film windows, which enable photon-in photon-out experiments of soft x-rays, becomes available for liquids and solutions. A new grazing incident x-ray emission spectrometer liquid nitrogen cooling CCD detector was also developed to achieve high efficiency detection. In addition, experimental method was also required to develop because there was only a few paper for liquid using soft x-ray emission spectroscopy when we started the study. For example, selective observation of molecule in solution by resonance excitation was demonstrated to observe electronic state of solute molecule in solution by our experiments.
As mentioned above, X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy provide information of occupied and unoccupied valence electronic state. Interestingly, for liquid water, X-ray emission spectra triggered debates on the liquid structure of water since spectra contains information beyond the electronic structure. In the talk, soft x-ray spectroscopy and liquid structure will be discussed, and recent results on chemical reaction on electrode related to a future plans will be also introduced.
