Brief BiosketchBefore Dr. Chen joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he was a chief engineer of global company - Alstom Power (now becomes GE Energy). Alstom is a leading company in power generation, transportation and rail infrastructure. The company offers a variety of power plant solutions and associated energy sources including hydro, nuclear, gas, coal, wind energy and solar energy. Dr. Chen and his team made a significant contribution in power generation research and management. During that time, he has been involved with the development of hardware and software for generator and gas turbine monitoring and diagnosis. Dr. Chen has proved to be a highly creative and respected professional with an outstanding contribution to meeting the national energy needs. Dr. Chen did a lot of efforts to promote the applications of renewable energy and business model of sustainable development. He hopes to enhance corporations' commitment on the sustainable development and to develop appropriate knowledge and skills. At the same time, Dr. Chen has established solid networks with many experts around the world to promote the research and development of sustainability.
Recently, Dr. Chen contributed most of his efforts in the development of new courses and innovative teaching methodology. He intended to create an intellectually engaging environment, where material is not only taught, but questioned by those present; an environment of critical thinking that has students confront, evaluate, assimilate, and synthesize new information in order to apply that information critically, practically, and effectively for decision-making and problem-solving develops the students' experience to be much more than the memorization of facts and figures that will be forgotten or superseded in today's ever-changing world. This type of environment will bring students into the learning process, rather than keeping them on the sidelines of knowledge.
