Dr. Pan-hang Tang graduated at Deakin University with a Ph.D. degree, studying how technology can help to develop children’s musical creativity. His dissertation, entitled “IT-assisted music composition education in Hong Kong primary schools”, was published by Scholars’ Press in Germany in 2014. The process and the findings of the research were summarized to form part of his paper, “Transforming the practice of music composition education under technological environment”, which was accepted at the 30th International Society for Music Education World Conference in 2012, and was published in the conference proceedings.
A practitioner with hands-on teaching experiences at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, and formerly a senior management staff of a through-train school, Dr. Tang has developed and taught various music curricula for different institutes, including Tuen Mun District Secondary Schools DSE Music Scheme (2016 – 2019), an Arts co-curricular workshop at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2014 – 2015), a summer gifted program on musical creativity at the University of Hong Kong (2013 – 2015), and the Centralized Scheme of Music Training for Senior Secondary Students organized by the Education Bureau (2003 – 2010).
Dr. Pan-hang Tang is also an active composer. He had initiated Hong Kong Composers’ Guide to run a 3-year project, the School Concert Series. His works “Concertino for recorders and piano” and “Little Ants” were accepted and performed in 2013 and 2014 respectively. His “La Messa Cinese” was published by the Sacred Music Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese and was performed by the Diocesan Choir in 2014.
Since 2015, Dr. Tang has been working with a team of researchers from Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan in a research project, which is a continuous collaboration, aiming to compare the education policies of each region. The findings of the previous phases were presented at the ISME Commission Seminar (2016, 2018), and the Asia-Pacific Symposium of Music Education Research (2017, 2019).
