Mack Enns is a musicologist who primarily researches music design, programming and implementation for video games, as well as music technology more broadly. He received a PhD in Music from The University of Western Ontario in 2019, and has since published a monograph on game scoring — music composition for video games — with Focal Press. Mack is interested in how new technologies transform musical creativity, and in turn the musical “moment” we live in. For example, his current research focuses on intersections between game music and popular music genres and practices, and how music programming has introduced new ways of creating music for electronic and hip-hop artists. Finally, Mack draws inspiration for his research by creating DJ mixes, “VJing” for live music concerts and emulating classic video games.
