Dr. Mouillot is a cultural theorist whose interdisciplinary research is at the intersection of Music, Cultural Studies, and Media Studies. Broadly speaking, his work deals with the technological, infrastructural and identity dimensions of musical and popular artistic practices. His multi-pronged research spans the developments of the recording and live music industries, the evolution of independent and underground music practices in various culturally hybrid contexst, the social and cultural implications of artificial intelligence in artistic practices, and improvisation and Do-It-Yourself practices in the popular arts. Some of his current interdisciplinary research projects include:
- A multi-sector study of the live music industries in Hong Kong (funded by an RGC General Research Fund grant).
- An examination of the social and cultural dimension of working with Generative Adversarial Networks in the creative arts (funded by an Interdisciplinary Research Clusters Matching Scheme grant).
- A multi-year analysis of non-mainstream music practices in Hong Kong and Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Mouillot holds a PhD in Communication Studies from McGill University, a M.A. degree in European Studies and a B.A. in Music from the University of Guelph, Canada. He has pursued his research and taught at the School of Creative Media-City University of Hong Kong, in the Department of Communication Studies at McGill University (Montreal, Canada), in the Department of Music at York University (Toronto, Canada), and in the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Guelph (Guelph, Canada). He is an active member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music and the Cultural Studies Association.
Dr. Mouillot plays the guitar and a number of electronic and noise-making instruments, and has participated in various projects blending popular and experimental musical aesthetics.
