Professor XU Jiankun, Jerry 许建坤
Bachelor of Clinical Medicine (SUMC), Master of Orthopaedics (SUMC), PhD (CUHK)
Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology
矫形外科及创伤学系助理教授

BIOGRAPHY
Professor Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). With clinical training background in Orthopaedics and in-depth understanding on musculoskeletal disorders, Professor Xu has devoted himself as an independent clinician-scientist and is good at establishing animal models for orthopaedics research.
Professor Xu has published more than 40 peer-reviewed SCI articles (total impact factor > 200) in regenerative medicine; 50 conference abstracts (most are oral presentations); 3 book chapters; 2 theses. Beyond completing his PhD study on the development of innovative biomaterials for the repair of tendon-bone insertion, he has also contributed greatly (as core member) in other important projects (collaborative research fund, theme-based research fund, and Areas of Excellence fund led by Prof. Qin Ling). For example, Professor Xu has made endeavors to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the new bone formation induced by magnesium-based implants and finally found that it is calcitonin-gene related peptide mediating the effect of magnesium. This finding has been recognized by as milestone for the development of magnesium as orthopaedic implants (published in Nature Medicine). This piece of work has been cited for more than 350 times. As principal investigator, he has been funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, Young Scholar Scheme), Health & Medical Research Fund, Direct Grant from CUHK, and other regional grants. Professor Xu also serves as co-investigator in several General Research Funded (GRF) project from RGC and. In addition, as PI, he has several proposals submitted to compete for GRF and ITF. Above efforts have earned Professor Xu numerous academic awards, including postgraduate research output award from CUHK, Webster Jee young investigator, Savio L.Y. Woo young researcher, and Tigris education fund.
Professor Xu is founding member of Sports Medicine Physician Union in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and members of another ten associations including Hong Kong Scientist Association. He supports peer-review and serves as reviewers for international journals (Biomaterials, Bioactive Materials, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Tissue Engineering (Part A), Journal of Biomedical Materials Research (Part A & Part B), Journal of Orthopaedics Translation, Scientific Reports, and Open Medicine).
