Programme Information

The programme emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and research skills and allows students to bring together different disciplinary and methodological approaches for the advancement of gender studies. 

Earning a total of at least 21 units, passing the written qualifying examinations, submitting a thesis and passing an oral examination are required for graduation. 

Fields of Specialization 

Students will conduct independent research under any department (including but not limited to Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Educational Administration and Policy, History, Japanese Studies, Journalism, Literature, Nursing, Psychology, Sociology or Social Work, and other allied fields) with a focus on gender.

Tuition Fee
HK$42,100 per annum regardless of the study mode
Admission Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should:

  1. have some knowledge of gender studies; and
  2. have good background in their intended field of concentration.

Applicants may come from a variety of backgrounds. On their application forms, applicants must indicate the subject discipline for which they wish to be considered. Meanwhile, applicants must present a research proposal providing a brief description of the intended research topic, objectives, and methods. The research proposal should use the academic method and approach characteristic of the applicants’ intended subject discipline to explore a topic involving issues of gender. Applications will be jointly considered by the Gender Studies Programme and the subject department.

1.  By 12:00 noon (Hong Kong time) - to submit an initial application to RGC; and
2. By 5:00 p.m. (Hong Kong time) - to submit full application to CUHK
