ScientificFocus:
Ionchannelsarefundamentalmembraneproteinsthatregulatetheflowofionsacrosscellmembranesandcontrolcellexcitabilityandfunction.Inappropriatechannelactivitiescausedbyeithermutationsorabnormalphysiologicalregulationsunderlietheetiologyofnumerouspathologies(collectivelyknownaschannelopathies).Thus,anunderstandingoftheirstructureandfunctionislikelytoleadtothedevelopmentofnewtherapeutics.Ourlaboratoryisinterestedininvestigatingthestructure-functionrelationship,physiologicalandpathophysiologicalrolesoftheso-calledsensoryionchannelssuchastemperature-activatedTransientReceptorPotential(TRP)channels(thermoTRPs),CalciumReleaseActivatedCalcium(CRAC)channels,andthenewlyidentifiedmechanicallyactivatedPiezochannels.Thesechannelscanfunctionasreceptorsfortouchstimuliincludingtemperature,chemicals,andmechanicalforce,andconsequentlygovernthesenseoftouch.Byfocusingoncharacterizingknownsensorychannelsandidentifyingnovelones,weaimtobetterunderstandthemolecularandcellularmechanismsofthesenseoftouchandpainandotherrelatedphysiologicalprocessessuchasinflammatoryresponseswithanultimategoalofidentifyingnoveltherapeutics.Techniquesemployedinourresearchincludemolecularbiology,biochemistry,singlecellorhigh-throughputcalciumimaging,electrophysiology,siRNAorcompoundlibraryscreening,generationandbehavioralanalysisoftransgenicmice,etc.Positionsforpostdoctoralfellow,graduatestudentandtechnicianareavailableinourlaboratory.
