Zicai Liang was trained as a biologist at Nankai University where he received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees and then as a Molecular Biologist at Uppsala University where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1995. He then spent 3 years in Yale University as a postdoc working on Drosophilia molecular genetics. In end of 1998 he moved to Karolinska Institute, Sweden to start his own group working on Genomics technologies as an Assistant Professor. He has also served as director of the Karolinska Institute DNA chip core facility (KICHIP). He also served as a founder and director of several biotech companies in Sweden. In 2004, he was awarded the title of associated professor (docent) at Karolinska Institute. He has alo been a visiting professor at Chinese Human Genome Center North since 2003. He is now a Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Nucleic Acid Technology at Institute of Molecular Medicine, Peking University (IMM/PKU). He also serves as Chairman of the Education Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Academic Committee of IMM at PKU and Vice-Chairman of Diploma Committee in Biology Science of PKU. In 2010, he was selected Vice Chairman of Nucleic Acid Sub-committee of the Chinese Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Currently, Prof. Liang’s research interests include application of siRNA and other nucleic acid tools in biomedical research and translational applications among which is in vivo application of siRNA for drug target validation and siRNA drug development.
Research Interests
Present research projects cover: 1) Applied research on specificity, stabilization and efficacy of siRNA, 2) development of novel siRNA methodologies and using the strategic siRNA resources that we have developed in the lab to tackle special biological questions, including the mechanism by which siRNA enters cells and is associated with the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) complex; the specificity of miRNA target selection,3) functional study of miRNA in various diseases, 4) Functional study of non-coding RNA, particularly ncRNA-protein interactions, 5) Development of RNAi-based therapy for major diseases.
