Teaching Experience
Born in Ireland, I have been teaching English since 1992, first in Spain and later in Korea, Japan, the UK and now China. I have focused on EAP / ESP since the early 2000s. My teaching experience ranges widely; teaching and examining Cambridge exam classes, IELTS preparation and examining, general English, Business English, Medical English, English for Physics and Chemistry, English for Financial Mathematics. In addition I have taught on many University Pre-Sessional courses in a number of UK universities (Nottingham, Northumberland and Sheffield). I also examine for the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
Professional and Personal Interests
I have given professional development talks at UNNC this academic year on student speaking skills and principles of material design for ESP courses. I am interested in the nitty gritty of material choice and design, classroom dynamics and interaction and getting students to read more.
I am quite active in sports (running, swimming and cycling), read widely in popular fields (history, culture, science), and have been listening to jazz for 35 years, and counting. I have cycle toured extensively in Asia and Europe. Spanish is my best foreign language.
