1. Biomedical PhotonicsBiomedical photonics provides solutions for medicine, biology and biotechnology based on photonics. Biomedical photonics contains the imaging and detection for biological materials and achieving detection, diagnosis and treatment for disease on both a macro and a micro level. Our major work is constructing the system of biophotonic sensing and imaging, such as scanning focused refractive-index microscopy, which can be applied to medical diagnosis and biological sensing.

2. Photoelectric DetectionPhotoelectric detection is applying novel optical detection methods and technologies into particular detection combining modern mechanical and electric technology. Our main research is developing lateral flow test strip reader based on embedded system and system of measuring parameters of end faces of steel pipes.

Lateral flow immunoassay is a widely used kind of rapid detection method. With conventional reporters, it could be used in quantitative detection or semi-quantitative detection of many analytes including antigens, antibodies, and even the products of nucleic acid amplification tests.
Nowadays, most of the test results are read out by human eyes. To determine the numerical value of the fluid concentration, the operator should compare it to the standard colorimetric card. As the inevitable difference between human eyes and the light circumstances, it’s difficult to avoid errors. Two operators may have two different opinions towards one test result, especially when the test result is near the cut-off value. This could be reduced by employing test strip reader. The research on developing the test strip reader has already begun. The typical reader is built by light source and optical detector that measures the light reflected from the strip based on the absorbance detecting method.
We have designed and fabricated a new lateral flow test strip reader based on ARM processor and embedded Linux operating system. The instrument uses green light-emitting diode as the light source, captures the test strip image with high-resolution CMOS image sensor, and then use the image-processing method to calculate the result. It has many advantages such as rapid, easy-to-use and reliable. When testing cocaine fluid of different concentrations, the analysis result of test strips shows that the accuracy is 1ng/ml and CV (coefficient of variation) is less than 3%. The instrument could also be used on other kinds of lateral flow strips.

In order to realize automatic non-contact measurement for pipe end inside diameter, outside diameter and ellipticity, while meeting the detection needs of seamless steel pipe production and processing enterprises, a pipe end inside and outside diameter measurement system is designed and implemented. First, use two laser optical triangulation sensors to perform a full scan of the inside and outside diameter as they rotate around the pipe ends. Then use fitting algorithm to reduce errors brought by the no coincidence of rotary axis and steel pipe axis. Motorized translation stages which are fixed on the sensor mounting arm, and a lift are provided at the same time to meet the measurement needs of different specifications of steel pipes. Experimental results indicate that the system measurement accuracy is less than 0.05mm; repeat accuracy is 5um; one measurement process lasts less than 25 seconds while 500 points are sampled per pipe end. It can fully meet the requirements of seamless steel pipe production enterprises, with advantages of high precision, easy operation and rapid speed. The system has passed the off-line test in the Tian Guan Yuan Tong pipe products Co. Ltd, Tianjin.
3. Study mechanism of optical clearing??The application of optical clearing technique can reduce the scattering coefficient and enhance the penetration depth of light in biotissues. It can achieve better optical efficiency in biomedical application. We establish a theoretical model of the measurement of optical parameters of bio-tissues under the total internal reflection method. After the application of the optical clearing technique, on the interface of bio-tissues, the refractive index matching status between cells' internal and external environments can be studied.
