Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.





On COVID-19
To our fellow researchers, students, andprospectivecollaborators:?????

I have always been working on emerging contaminants since the beginning of my PhD, and this virus, out of all the things I know, is the most dangerous ‘emerging contaminant’ threatening public health. I couldn't help but often staring at the rolling numbers and statistics thinking how many people are dying from this disease every day, every hour, and every moment, somewhere in this world. And we don't even know where it came from and how it got to this far.

I was born in the 80s, and have been through the 1998 flood, 2003 SARS, the Christchurch earthquake, etc. This is nothing like what I have seen.

Since the beginning of my research career, I have been an experimental scientist. Every single project I did was an experimental study. I believe in science, and even more so in data. But now, I have a strong will to contribute, through commentaries, critical reviews, data analyses, new ideas, to voice our concerns and share our thoughts that could be useful to others in this pandemic. To me, the goal of saving lives through research has never been so real, and so urgent. If this doesn't motivate us, I don't know what will.

Medical researchers are racing against time, and so are we. The rolling numbers and daily mortality counts make us think that getting our best work out in a timely fashion is the most important thing for us to contribute on COVID-19. We have a dedicated 10-person team led by myself working day and night to ensure timely delivery and the scientific rigor of our work.

Viruses and pandemics are an essential part of the evolution process. Being the most intelligent species living on this planet, we humans have enjoyed far too many privileges by exploiting natural resources and other living species on this planet, for far too long. There is a time we must stop and think about how we could do better, live better, and get along better with other species living on earth, our only home. For now, there is nothing as urgent as understanding the origin, infection, and transmission of this virus in our communities, and for that we must stand together, research, and communicate using science as our most powerful tool to protect more people from dying from this pandemic.

【更新】On 29 January 2021, Nature published a Feature article (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00251-4) where the author combed through existing evidence on fomite transmission of COVID-19 and raised questions over the cleaning and disinfection protocols that have been widely put in place in response to COVID-19. On the same day, two Australian scientists wrote a Letter to Science (https://science.sciencemag.org/content/371/6528/474.1.full) expressing concerns over the surging use of antimicrobials including disinfectants, sanitizers, and antiseptics during COVID-19, and warned on the potential of disinfectant-facilitated bacterial acquisition of antimicrobial resistance, a widely acknowledged environmental and public health risk. Our article, which was written on 7 December 2020 and currently under peer review, presents the first systematic view and in-depth analysis on this subject in the current literature context, by focusing on the chemical disinfecting agents currently approved for COVID-19 disinfection.

美国德特里克堡(Fort Detrick)生物实验室最近发表的一项follow-up study 中,引用并验证了本文的结论。作者用SARS-CoV-2真病毒,模拟阳光下车内密闭升温环境(气温54.5摄氏度、相对湿度20%、304不锈钢表面,3组重复),观察到新冠病毒在36分钟 (+/- 9分钟) 后,灭活率达到90%。

A follow-up study conducted at BNBI at Fort Detrick, United States, cited our findings and validated our conclusions in this paper. Authors used real SARS-CoV-2 isolates in their experiments simulating conditions in cabins of enclosed vehicles parked under direct sunlight after a short period of time (i.e., 54.5 deg C, relative humidity 20%, on 304 stainless steel surfaces, in triplicate). The authors observed a 90% decrease in virus infectivity after 36 min (+/- 9 min). The results aligned well with our recommendation(20-30 min) based on our field measurements and data drawn on the thermal stability of SARS-CoV-2 available then.

Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.

On carbon neutrality & climate change

"At the start of every disaster movie isa scientist being ignored."
In 1988, Dr. James Hansen testified before the U.S. Congress about his research and evidenceon global warming.His warning —andthose by his peers —were largely ignored then by policy makers.

Eighteen years later, Davis Guggenheim directed a documentary film,"An Inconvenient Truth", featuring a slideshow presented by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in hiscampaign to raise public awareness on global warming. Leavaraged from the influence of American popular culture, the film media, and Gore's own publicity and influence as a former U.S. presidential candidate, thedocumentary raised international awareness on global warmingand more generally, on climate change. The documentary won two Academy Awards and became the 11th highest grossing documentary in the United States. Gore receivedthe Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.


Now we know global warming is a matter offact, not something for political debate.The atmospheric CO2 concentration surpassed 400 parts per million in 2020. The last time carbon dioxide reached this level on earth was about 4,000,000 years ago, when the planet was about 3 deg C warmer and oceans were at least 10 meters higher thanthe present day(source: NOAA and Reuters).

In 2019, power plants that burned coal, natural gas, and petroleum fuels were the source of about 62% of totalelectricity generation in the U.S., but they accounted for 99% of U.S. electricity-related CO2 emissions. The other 1% of CO2 emissions were from other fuels and gases derived from fossil fuels and some types of geothermal power plants (source: eia.gov).Dataarelacking in many other countriesbut they are expected to show a similar trend.

This is a man-made crisis. And it is up to the humankind to rectify it. We need committments, actions, technologies, and research to tackle this grand challenge. Scientists have an essential role to take in this imperative. Their work and voices, should no longer be ignored.

The 2021 East Asia sandstorm drewinternational attention to ecological issues that have been culminating for decades in Mongolia. Addressing these issues would require decades of collaborative efforts from climate, ecological, atmospheric and environmental scientists from its local and global research communities. In the renowned Mongolian folk song ‘The Night of Ulaanbaatar’, the songwriter painted the tranquility of life and picturesque landscape in Ulaanbaatar. It is now a matter of actions for its regulators, scientists, and residents to regain such lifestyles in the 'country of eternal blue sky'.
作者注 (Authors’ Note):Mongolia is one of the countries that are most vulnerable to climate change. In the last few decades, the landlocked country has battled against severe, recurring droughts and vast, increasingly frequent sandstorms. An international group of climate scientists recently securitized heatwave and soil moisture records from local tree ring data, and found that the recent consecutive years of record high temperatures and droughts in Mongolia were unprecedented in over 250 years (Zhang et al. 2020, Science. 1095). The study also found that record high temperatures in the region are accelerated by soil drying which, in turn, allows direct heat transfers to air due to the lack of moisture kept in soils and cooling effects induced by evaporation.A positive feedback loop was thus created between soil moisture deficits -surface warming,which causes an abrupt shift to a hotter and drier climate in the region.
In an earlier survey, researchers found that more than a quarter of the lakes greater than 1.0-km2 in the Mongolian Plateau had disappeared between 1987–2010 (Tao et al. 2015, PNAS. 2281). Of those, 63 lakes (17.6%) in Mongolia had dried up, including 58 small lakes (1–10 km2), four medium-size lakes (10–50 km2), and one large lake with an area size greater than 50 km2. In a period of just over 20 years, the lake area in Mongolia diminished by 332 km2, representing 2.4% of the total lake area in the inland country.
On an evenlonger timescale, the annual reconstruction of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) spanning over a course of 2060 years showed that recent extreme drought observed on the Mongolian Plateau were highly unusual, which exceeded a 900-year return interval (Hessl et al. 2018, Sci. Adv. e**).
Both the magnitude and pace of those recent changes promoted warnings that the semi-arid region may have entered a new climate regime, in which soil and surface water could no longer mitigate high temperatures and provide adequate precipitation, a failure that can have devastating consequences on the country’s agricultural sector.

Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.





Big Scientific Data
What are 'big scientific data' and why do we research it?

We all heard about ‘big data’. The explosive amount of information published in scientific literature makes 'big data' also a reality for scientists to munch on, day in and day out. For just about every research discipline, there are a countless number of publications. If you are stepping into a well-established research domain, even combing through the existing findings and gaps becomes a daunting task that can take weeks to months to accomplish. To put things into perspective, the number of scientific publications indexed in Clarivate? Web of Science Core Collection in the environmental science discipline has grown from just over 6,000 in 1990 to an astonishing 265,000 in 2020, an increase of 42.5-fold. And the number keeps growing.

On the bright side, we have many, many peer-reviewed scientific references that are available and, with the advancement of information technology and mobile computing, today they are literally at our fingertips. Having gone through the peer review process, these represent - at least at the time of their publication – new discoveries, fresh opinions, and critical assessments carried out by researchers all around the globe. The downside, however, is that it becomes increasingly difficult for one to quickly grasp the essence of the current data and knowledge – especially when you are under pressure or running against time in a fast-spreading pandemic.

The classic wisdom, of course, is to read reviews. This approach has served us well and I was among one of those who strongly advocate reading reviews before narrowing down your research focus on any particular subject. The body of existing literature, however, keeps growing bigger but there is only so much you can convey in a 10,000-word article, the ‘typical’ length limit of reviews published in the environmental science discipline. Today, review articles are narrowing their focuses to deliver critical, in-depth insights. This approach helps readers gain invaluable insights into particular topic areas, but are not helpful for one to quickly gain an overall understanding and state-of-the-art knowledge over the whole subject area, a task that is often faced by industrial scientists, engineers, decision-makers to develop new technologies and prioritize future research efforts, as well as young students and scholars who are about to start their research career in a particular field of study.

There are many questions we wish to answer - and many things we want to achieve - through the use of data science. Below are some true stories drawn from my personal experience over the years working as an environmental scientist and an enthusiast in advancing public health. Data science is exciting and rapidly evolving as an emerging research discipline in its own right. There are just so many things for us to explore. We are continuing to explore and will have other stories to share with you. Come back and check for our updates.

1) Choosing a path you are about to step onto

First I wish to share a story of my once awkward conversation with a seniorperson.

About ten years ago, in a nicely decorated meeting room at a prestigious university, a senior person from the university's management told me “You can spend your time on anything." It was not meant to inspire or motivate me. Rather, what it actually meant was that "...Make sure you spend your time on things that are worthwhile". This was the whole point why we had that conversation.

That conversation stayed with me. Ten years later, I still ask myself this hypothetical question, sometimes as early as when I get up in the morning. It just popped into my mind.

It is a hard question to answer after all. And it can be even harder for someone who just began their postgraduate study or launched their independent research career. There are so many things we don’t know yet, and scientific literature looks like a gigantic, expanding ocean for us to navigate through in pitch dark.

Yet we must face this question head on, and put serious thoughts into it, even though the answer may not be obvious at all and can take us a while to find out.

Those who have been through the process would know that, the real first step of starting your postgraduate study or chart a research career is - after you have made up your mind to do so - is to choose a topic that you are passionate about and can benefit the society or humanity in some way - to answer the whole "worthwhile" question and to gain recognition later from your achievements, provided that you do get there eventually.

Answering this question or rather - shedding some light onto it - was the very first thing we hope to answer with data science. In science, we often do not know where it is going to lead us (and in many cases this is the whole point of why we do it), but we do need to know what the current focus is, what has been done, what are the consensuses, and perhaps most importantly, what hasn't been done and how it intersects with our personal interests because, for young students and scholars, that is where the real opportunities are.

Ramblings on May 20, 2021

To me, the whole idea of ‘Planetary Environmental Engineering’ started in 2016. I first brought up this idea with my research associate in 2019. And again in May 2021, when a student came over, with excitementin her eyes, and talked about 'space debris'.

The first time I read about 'terraforming’, I found it mind blowing. The whole idea kept me excited for the rest of that day, and I read nothing else but that, for a few hours straight. Those who thought about this idea were true pioneers of the humankind. I’m deeply humbled by their vision and imagination.

I feel now it is the time for us to, at least, start our conversations on this futuristic yet deeply intriguing topic.

Here is a collection of our thoughts and ideas, in no particular order. As of now, we don’t have anything published yet, but we are hoping to do so over the next few months.

Let’s start from space debris (space junk).

If aliens want to visit earth, they would have to go through our trashes first.



We live in an era where humans can ‘engineer’ just about anything. The term ‘environmental engineering’, literally, means crafting a desirable environment for humans to live in. The most sophisticated task for environmental engineers, therefore, is to build a new ecosystem on a new planet, for humans to live in.



Environmental engineering may, one day, take the central stage of all engineering disciplines because it - once we take it to the space - enables humans to take possession of one thing that they have thirsted and fought each other for thousands of years – new land.



Environmental engineers have spent much efforts on remediating, but much less on creating. Terraforming is the future – and perhaps the ultimate – goal of studying environmental engineering.

Why do we have to accept the fact that Earth is our *only* home? The whole universe is out there for human exploration.



Terraforming isn't about finding a new planet and abandoning our junk-filled earth, or having a backup if earth is destroyed or becomes inhabitable. It's about finding some other interesting places to go. Earth is great and we humans can keep it great.



Here is the question we hope to answer through Planetary Environment Engineering: Can we install a new ecological system on a new planet for human habitation?



If the earliest life forms on earth were microbes, can we engineer some hardcore microbes and seed them all over Mars to terraform the planet?



Engineering an ecosystem on a new planet may prove more realistic than finding an earth-like planet in a distant galaxy. The universe is mind-blowingly vast: we either have to find some 'wormholes' or travel near the speed of light just to get there.



Let's hope we don't need a visa to go to Mars.

工程交付:完成富兰克林区管辖范围内32个污水泵站与连接的压力污水管道的变频器升级方案。包括压力污水管的材质、大小、长度、管道内污水流速、管道纵向高低数据分析。实地勘察污水泵站,验证已有的施工图纸数据与压力污水管道中水锤现象(water hammer)严重程度。检查一些泵站中的设施老化、泵阻塞、腐蚀与异味。最终确定6个污水泵站的变频器安装,完成工程成本核算与变频器操作逻辑的设计。

工程交付:确定该校未来5年雨水与污水基建工程项目的投资优先级。通过审查已建成工程项目图纸、走访资产管理人员与现场勘察,建立该校首份雨水、污水设施明细。依照设施的使用年限、材质、尺寸、数量与功能对各项设施进行状态评估。确定剩余寿命有限的设施与CCTV检测(管道闭路电视检测)优先顺序。

污水泵站与压力污水管道变频器升级

工程交付:完成基督城市区范围内共115个污水泵站与所连接的压力污水管道的数据分析。根据现有管道材料、尺寸、长度与管道内污水流速等数据,评估污水压力管道受压力变化冲击的风险等级与变频器升级的优先级。最终方案对23个压力污水管道按照4个优先级顺序进行泵站变频器升级。完成各泵站变频器操作逻辑的设计与工程成本估算。

工程交付:完成Waingake水处理厂蓝藻细菌和蓝藻毒素管理协议,以降低吉斯本地区主要饮用水源的安全风险。该协议根据2005年新西兰饮用水标准(2008年修订版)与世卫组织(WHO)指南文件制定。协议规定了水源水与处理水中的蓝藻和蓝藻毒素水平、应急响应措施与水中每一级污染物数值对应所需的水质监测频率。

工程交付:设计、建造序批式活性污泥法(SBR)处理与铁/碳微电解耦合自养反硝化除磷(MEAD)处理装置对北京周边一座村庄生活污水的高级处理。该装置可实现低比例5日生化需氧量/化学需氧量(BOD5/COD)之下的总氮、总磷去除。
人工浮岛修复景观湖水富营养化
客户:北京市园林绿化局
设计/咨询费:30万
工程交付:设计、建造一个人工浮岛用于5000平米面积景观湖内水体富营养化的原位修复,地点位于北京香山公园。该人工浮岛设计集成了生物与物化修复过程。三个月后湖内水体中的氨氮含量、总氮、总磷、藻类显著下降。水质从5级提高至3级(我国地表水环境水质标准GB3838-2002)。
校园内部雨洪管理系统(雨水花园)

工程交付:设计、建造一座雨水花园用于大学校园内的雨洪管理。花园集成了现代景观建筑设计,用于雨水的收集、处理、存储与回用,年雨水回用量超过11000立方米,节水量与整所大学自来水年用量相当。

Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.

韩杰,西安交通大学人居环境与建筑工程学院教授、博士生导师。获西安交通大学化学工程学士、西安交通大学环境工程硕士、奥克兰大学化学与材料工程博士学位(Times全球排名147)。在Water Research、Environmental Science & Technology、Journal of Materials Chemistry A、Science of the Total Environment、Environmental Pollution等本领域高水平学术期刊上发表论文60余篇,Web of Science核心数据库总引用1100余次。已主持科研项目4项,获直接经费资助逾350万元。

课题组招收留学生、研究生联合培养
受新冠疫情影响,许多留学生不能正常入学、返校。

课题组接收留学生进行访问研究项目、实习项目、联合培养项目、final-year research project、gap-year project等形式的长、短期研究项目。课题组将提供项目以及所需的仪器、设备、耗材,并由课题组老师提供一对一指导,确保学生在疫情期间顺利开展所需的科研项目。

项目内容与时长可依照学生需求和疫情发展拟定。培养方式与目标与本课题组研究生一致,并确保研究成果归属(请参考以下联合培养细则)学生须按要求在西安市本地医院完成核酸检测并出示核酸阴性证明。

课题组将为每一位同学提供一对一的悉心指导,尊重并保护学生的兴趣和科研热情,鼓励学生独立思考、大胆创新。
由导师或课题组经验丰富的老师指导学生从项目立意到论文发表全程中的文献检索、文献分析与写作。包括深度查新、文献与信息检索、结构化快速文献阅读、定向信息筛查、论文写作、修改与投稿,以及发表后的成果推广。
由课题组经验丰富的老师与高年级研究生共同指导学生的基本实验操作。力求快速掌握并理解其操作原理,知其然并知其所以然,力求在现有方法的基础上进一步提高和创新。
课题组定期进行实验操作和安全培训,培养学生的安全与规范操作意识。
着重培养学生的批判性思维与创新能力,发掘新的研究前沿,提炼新的科学问题,找出细分领域中的关键研究与技术瓶颈。

课题组为每位同学购买人身意外保险,并为外地或本地通勤时间较长的同学提供一定的租房补贴。

韩杰,西安交通大学人居环境与建筑工程学院教授、博士生导师。获西安交通大学化学工程学士、西安交通大学环境工程硕士、奥克兰大学化学与材料工程博士学位(Times全球排名147)。在Water Research、Environmental Science & Technology、Journal of Materials Chemistry A、Science of the Total Environment、Environmental Pollution等本领域高水平学术期刊上发表论文60余篇,Web of Science核心数据库总引用1100余次。已主持科研项目4项,获直接经费资助逾350万元。
韩杰教授目前担任Elsevier出版社Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety(JCR Q1期刊;中科院毒理学1区、环境科学2区期刊)期刊编委、人畜共患病领域专业期刊Animal Diseases(BMC Springer Nature出版社)期刊编委,并担任美国科学编辑理事会成员(Council of Science Editors),中国科学技术期刊编辑学会会员(CESSP),美国化学会(ACS)与国际水协会(IWA)长期会员。入职前曾在本领域多个国际顶尖实验室学习和工作,包括麻省大学阿默斯特分校(UMass Amherst)连续全球高被引****Baoshan Xing教授课题组、伊利诺伊大学香槟分校(UIUC)土木与环境工程系主任Benito Marinas教授课题组、新加坡国立大学(NUS)水研究中心主任Jiangyong Hu教授课题组,已发表多篇高水平论文并保持着长期研究合作,研究成果被国内外50多家媒体报道。个人经历与代表性成果请见个人主页 http://gr.xjtu.edu.cn/web/jiehan。
环境科学被列为西安交通大学重点建设学科。课题组获得学校重点支持。韩杰教授2018年获得西安交通大学青年拔尖人才(A类)支持。课题组尤其注重对学生科研与创新能力的培养。最近一年,课题组在JCR Q1期刊上已发表论文17篇,另已投稿5篇。已发表的17篇论文中,13篇均由学生在课题组老师指导下独立完成并以论文第一作者署名。近期成果请参考课题组主页。

致本科生同学们:

同学们好!“爱助研”是我们课题组最早发起的一个长期非盈利性项目。旨在为准备读研的本科生,提供一个灵活、自由的平台(限制少、时间和课题方向选择灵活),让更多的同学能够独立完成或者深度参与到自己感兴趣的科研项目中。

爱助研是一个长期项目,因此不设置固定的起始与截止时间。项目时长一般为3-6个月,也可以根据兴趣和需要来缩短或延长。主要利用同学们的课余和假期时间,包括寒暑假。同学们可以灵活安排自己的工作时间、工作地点。

右边是我们为爱助研项目制作的一个海报,是我们的学生自己设计的。在海报的最后给出了一些案例。篇幅限制,只列了一部分。除这些以外,我们还有很多好的想法(同时欢迎同学们提出自己感兴趣想法)。既有以文献和数据分析为主的,也有以实验为主的,还有文献+实验的综合型研究课题。同学们完全可以依照自己的兴趣和时间来挑选。挑选综合型项目的同学,还可和其它同学或课题组的研究生们组队,分工协作,共同完成。

本科生作为核心成员,独立完成或者深度参与科研项目,这在国外高校里十分普遍。我自己有过多个成功的案例。我先后带过20多名不同专业、不同年级的本科生、交换生和几位一年级的研究生。其中大多数都培养出他们对科研的浓厚兴趣,不仅出色地完成了项目,还和我一起共同发表了许多高水平研究论文(这些学生的名字从我过去发表的论文中都可以一一查到)。这些论文既是我们共同的回忆,也是他们在后续的研究生和工作申请中的一个关键加分项。其中几位成功申请到耶鲁大学、宾夕法尼亚大学、麻省大学医学院、澳大利亚新南威尔士大学的研究生,还有几位拿到澳大利亚Woodside Petroleum、新西兰Fonterra的工作offer。这些经历一再证明,只要有好的想法,愿意付出一些时间,本科生作为核心成员独立完成或深度参与科研项目,发表高水平的研究论文,是完全可以实现的。

我们不仅教经验和技巧,还教方法和思路。从项目最初的立意和构思,文献的检索、筛选和快速阅读,到数据与信息的分析与总结,关键科学问题与观点的提炼,论文写作的辅导与深度修改,我们为每一位同学,提供一对一的指导。同时,认真听取同学们的兴趣与诉求,帮助同学们从科研中找到自己的兴趣点和目标,对读研、对未来,不再迷茫。

爱助研项目问答汇总 (2021.06.15更新)
1. 爱助研项目设立的初衷,是什么?
爱助研项目的中心是学生(本科生)。项目设立的目的,不是让本科生参与项目,完成一些琐碎工作,为研究生和课题组服务。爱助研名称中的“助”,指的是课题组老师和高年级研究生,帮助同学们找到自己感兴趣的方向和科研项目,以言传身教,手把手教会同学们科研的基本方法和技能,为将来读研、出国深造,乃至今后走上与科研和技术相关的工作岗位,打下扎实的基础。
我们鼓励学生(本科生)以第一完成人身份来主导项目。这也是爱助研项目的默认模式。具体是指,学生在课题组老师的指导下和课题组研究生的帮助下,较为独立地完成课题,并以第一作者身份在成果上署名。对于时间少,想参与而非主导科研项目的同学,我们也同样欢迎。无论哪一种模式,课题组都将在项目进行的过程中,提供所需的科研平台,包括硬件、软件、培训和一对一的指导,帮助同学们去一步步实现这个目标。
2. 本科期间的科研成果,有什么用?
本科期间高质量的科研经历,尤其是可公开检索的科研成果(如论文、专利等),对同学们今后的读研、出国申请,不仅有直接帮助,而且是至关重要的加分项。在爱助研项目初期的宣传海报上,我们已经对此给出了明确建议。这里再次总结一下。
第一,本科期间利用课外时间和假期,独立完成科研项目,并且在可公开检索的科研成果上以主要完成人身份署名,是判断一个人对于科研的持久兴趣、毅力、对科研基本方法的掌握、逻辑思维能力和创新能力,最直接也是最有力的证明。
第二,本科期间接触到的一些研究领域的前沿,能帮助学生在上研之前找准自己的兴趣点。研究方向的选择,事关今后的个人发展和职业规划,是每一位准备上研的同学都应该去认真思考的问题。如何找到一个自己真正感兴趣的点,又符合国家和行业当前发展所需?得到这个问题的答案可能并非易事。最好的做法是边思考、边尝试、边调整。
第三,本科阶段深入接触科研工作,知道科研到底做什么、怎么做,可以帮助同学们判断读研是否与自己的兴趣相符,大幅降低试错成本。如果你从这个过程中学到了知识和技能,并得到了充实与快乐,那么读研对你来说,可能非常适合。先有目标再努力。只有这样,才能在未来考研、课题和导师的选择,以及整个研究生阶段学习的过程中,充满了动力。研究生阶段的学习与本科阶段有很大区别。本科阶段的学习成绩更多地代表了对课堂知识的掌握,项目也通常以分工协作的形式进行。研究生阶段则更依靠发掘个人兴趣、主动学习,更注重知识的运用与创新。与本科学习阶段不同的是,研究生的项目通常较独立,项目中的大部分工作通常由自己独立完成。
3. 参加爱助研项目的方式,具体有哪些?
在项目角色上,可以分为主研(学生自己主导项目,第一完成人)、助研(项目参与者)。
主研,指的是学生在课题组老师的指导下,较独立地完成课题,最终以第一作者身份在成果上署名。助研,则指的是学生课余时间较少或者课题本身工作量较大的情况下,负责项目中的部分工作(如深度查新、文献信息收集和筛选、完成某个环节的实验、部分的数据分析和处理等),最终依照项目中参与者的贡献,与合作者一起,为成果共同署名。
在项目类型上,我们既有以文献和数据分析为主的文献类项目,也有以实验为主的实验型项目,还有文献 +实验的综合型项目。学生可根据依照自己的兴趣和时间来挑选。
4. 每周需要花多少时间?平时课余时间不多,利用寒暑假可以吗?
同学们可以根据课程、考试和其它课外项目,灵活安排每周的工作时间。时间较紧张的同学,每周有8小时以上的时间即可。时间较充裕的同学,每周可以安排10-20个小时,更多则不限。假期的大块时间有利于集中学习和快速提高。鼓励同学们利用假期时间,报名参加自己感兴趣的爱助研项目。
5. 如何确保实验室安全?
由课题组经验丰富的老师与高年级研究生一起共同指导学生的实验操作,确保学生在实验上的规范操作。课题组定期进行实验操作和安全培训,培养学生的安全与规范操作意识。实验室每周进行一次安全检查,杜绝安全隐患。
6. 为什么做科研,需要有成果发表?
科研成果主要以论文、专利等形式公开发表。发表后全球主要文献数据库中均可检索出作者信息和研究成果的内容。
高水平、可公开检索的论文与专利,是全球自然科学领域对于科研成果衡量的通用标准,也是证明一个人的科研经历、文献阅读与写作能力、思辨能力、创新能力等多项综合能力的硬性标准。它们不仅是科研成果的最小单位,也是衡量尚处在求学阶段的研究和技术人员科研能力与科研产出的主要依据。这些早期的科研成果,在发表后,还会一直伴随你们,在后续的发展道路上,持续为你们加分。
7. 论文署名的规则,是什么?
在项目接近完成阶段,我们依照平等、友好的原则,由学生、导师和项目中其它参与人员,共同商议,依照各人贡献,为成果共同署名。通常,主导项目工作并完成论文或专利文档撰写的同学,默认为第一作者。成果为论文形式的,同等贡献的参与者还可列为论文并列的第一作者(也成为”共同第一作者“)。
8. 课题组会给学生提供什么样的培训,具体的内容是?
首先,文献部分。根据我的个人经验,这部分实际上是我们国家大多数低年级研究生的一个共同弱项。这部分工作具体包括课题的深度查新、中英文文献与信息检索、结构化快速文献阅读、定向信息筛查、论文或专利的写作辅导、深度修改、投稿或提交,以及提交后如何回答论文审稿人或专利审查员的提问,和公开发表后的成果推广。
其次,实验部分,除了传统意义上的实验,这块也包括模型计算、数值模拟、大数据分析。主要由课题组经验丰富的老师与高年级研究生共同培训学生在实验上的基本操作。力求做到快速掌握,并理解其操作原理,知其然并知其所以然。同时,鼓励学生在现有方法的基础上,进一步提高和创新。
9. 做实验、查文献、写论文过程中,遇到困难怎么办?
课题组老师将为每一位同学,提供一对一的悉心指导。此外,还可向高年级研究生寻求帮助。课题组学术氛围浓厚,团结友爱,责任心强,遇到困难同学们通常都会主动帮忙。同学们遇到问题要多想、多问,不用犹豫。
10. 课题组目前有哪些对本科生开放的项目,可供选择?
请见本页上方所列的项目列表。我们会不定期地更新、扩充这个列表。此外,我们也鼓励同学们自拟感兴趣的题目。同学们可以参考课题组网页上列出的研究方向,但无需受其限制。有好的想法我们可以随时讨论、头脑风暴。
11. 我目前不是西交大的在校学生,如何参与?
爱助研同时招募本科生开展远程项目,面向全国高校开放。不限于西交大或西安本地的同学。
课题组目前有多个可远程进行的项目,包括文献分析类、模型计算与数值模拟、文献信息学、数据与大数据分析等方向。
参与远程项目的同学,将由课题组老师安排对接。形式为每两周一次书面总结 (寒暑假为每周一次)+ 面对面讨论(线上),讨论时间不少于45分钟。
12. 课题组有成功案例吗,已参与的同学目前项目的进展如何?
2021年1月28日,课题组第一次进行爱助研项目的线上 + 线下宣讲。目前已有12名学生,从大一到大三的都有,来自6个不同的专业。其中10名同学为独立项目,学生自己主导。其中9个为文献类项目、3个为实验类项目、1个为综合型项目。
其中一名同学参与的爱助研项目(与另外两名研究生组队),论文已发表于JCR Q1期刊,影响因子5.93。该同学负责项目前期文献调研过程中的大部分信息收集工作,一共大约花了3周时间,两名研究生则完成了实验、论文撰写与修改工作。论文发表链接:https://doi.org/10.1007/s10311-020-01132-4
另一名同学参与的爱助研项目,论文已投稿,目前在同行评议环节。该同学参与了项目中的部分实验(化妆品的使用),并在项目初期搜集了部分文献中的信息和数据。
其它同学的项目均在进行中,其中几名同学正在完成论文初稿。除此之外,课题组还指导了由4名环境专业三年级本科生完成的2021年的“腾飞杯”项目和4名生物专业一年级本科生完成的“格兰富杯”节能减排社会实践与科技竞赛。
高水平的论文发表是科研工作人员的日常。最近一年里,课题组共发表了17篇研究论文,全部发表在JCR Q1期刊(影响因子5-7),另有5篇已投稿。已发表的论文里,11篇均出自论文发表“零基础”的一年级研究生。我们有一套多年的摸索和试错总结出来的经验,针对学生在科研中普遍遇到的一些困难,有的放矢地给同学们打基础、补短板,让同学们能把自己最好的成果,以最快的速度发表出去。
13. 爱助研项目收不收费?有没有隐含费用?
你无需为此支付任何费用。课题组提供项目进行过程中的仪器、设备、耗材、场地、软件等所需,供学生合理、节约使用。

Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.

工作内容:针对当前国内外环境与公众健康领域中的热点问题,参与短期学术研究课题。具体工作为,在课题组老师的指导下,检索并筛选信息,设计方案,完成数据采集与分析,记录方法步骤,撰写总结报告。

岗位设置与月薪:初级/中级/高级研究助理(3500/4000/4500元),条件优秀者待遇可面议。课题组将为每位同学购买人身意外保险。对于通勤时间长,需要在工作地点附近租房的同学,课题组将额外提供一定的租房补贴。

Prior to joining XJTU, I received research training and experience from the University of Auckland (UoA), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and worked with the PIs of several world-renowned laboratories in my fields. Since my Auckland times, I have supervised about 30 students, including several undergraduates and Master's students who later developed strong interests in scientific research and pursued PhDs. To date, I have delivered several research projects as the PI with about 3.5 million yuan in funding.I have a strong passion in scientific writing, editing, and communication. I hold appointments as the editorial board member of two scholarly journals and serve as a member of the Council of Science Editors and the China Editology Society of Science Periodicals.





Message to international students

China is increasingly seen as a global innovation hub for young students and entrepreneurs.

As global citizens, we have worked with many others with highly mixed ethnical and educational backgrounds. Me and my team members worked in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States for more than 25years combined, where English is the primary language for teaching, researching, and our daily communication. While working overseas at different universities, I have taught or supervised, along with my research associates, more than 20 students on their research projects or dissertations. The majority of those students were of non-Chinese ethnicity.

We share the common interest of having our passion for science and the goal of using scientific research to better serve humanity and our communities. Outside work, we enjoy food, music, sports, nice weather, and outdoor activities. We met people who later became our lifelong friends with heartwarming memories and enriched cultural experiences, people with so many different cultural backgrounds, from Africa to South America.

Biography
I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Environmental and Public Health Group and a Professor with a 'Young Talent Tier A' appointment at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), member of the C9 league universities in China, which is ranked among the top 10 in science and engineeringin the country.

The overall theme of my research is on emerging contaminants and public health, and much of my previous work was on the migration of trace organic compounds into and out of polymers including membranes, plastics, and elastomers. I have a strong interest in advancing public health including exposure identification, risk assessment, mitigation, and science communication to the public.

Fun & pretty things (Pics taken by myself)

Spotted this in a forest. Just like one of those in fairy tales.

Tiles, tiles, and more tiles. This is what it looks when you get really close to the Sydney Opera House. But very pretty & impressive if you look at it from a distance.It's amazing how architects created this brilliant structure with tiles and concretes,in 1973.

It's actually much more impressive when you look up from the underneath. A masterpiece of engineering and human ingenuity.

These are very common in European countries but I just found them fascinating. Almost every one of them.Friends told me they feel the same way when they are travelling inAsia.

A nice temple in nice surroundings. Everything is so quiet here.

They are kinda aggressive but the good thing is you can get very close to them.

I heard they are vicious animals. But I never saw them being that way.

Epidemiology of Animal Infectious Disease

In the past century, there were numerous regional or global outbreaks in animals that have arisen and waned, such as Pestilence, PRRS, African swine fever, and influenza. Some animal originated human diseases, SARS, MERS, and most recently, COVID-19, have proven challenging to prevent and control. These diseases not only cause enormous economic losses to the animal farming industry, but also possess serious threats to human health.

The issue of Epidemiology of Animal Infectious Diseases will be a compilation of research articles and reviews that update and attempt to fill some of the evidence gaps in the epidemiologic literature on emerging and reemerging animal infectious diseases which caused by microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria or parasites. The aim of this issue is to provide timely reports about the surveillance, transmission, transition, and prevention of emerging and re-emerging animal diseases and zoonoses in certain area or globally. Novel control approaches to common infectious diseases, modeling approaches to recent and new epidemics are also welcomed.
