§ Inspirational and Motivational Quotes

● The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics.
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
in Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times (Kline 1972, page 231), Oxford University Press

● ...the most diverse phenomena are subject to a small number of fundamental laws which are reproduced in all the acts of nature.
Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768–1830)
in The Analytical Theory of Heat (Fourier 1878, page 1) translated by Alexander Freeman, Cambridge University Press

● It seems to be one of the fundamental features of nature that fundamental physical laws are described in terms of a mathematical theory of great beauty and power, needing quite a high standard of mathematics for one to understand it. You may wonder: Why is nature constructed along these lines? One can only answer that our present knowledge seems to show that nature is so constructed. We simply have to accept it. One could perhaps describe the situation by saying that God is a mathematician of a very high order, and He used very advanced mathematics in constructing the universe. Our feeble attempts at mathematics enable us to understand a bit of the universe, and as we proceed to develop higher and higher mathematics we can hope to understand the universe better.
Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac (1902–1984)
in The Evolution of the Physicist’s Picture of Nature (Dirac 1963, page 53, paragraph 3), Scientific American

§ A Voyage through Turbulence: in search of the great (turbulent) ocean of truth

My first scientific publication came out in 1991. Over the years, it had seemed to myself and others that each of my scientific investigations was aimed in a different direction. I now feel that this apparent disorder was misleading: it hid a strong unity of purpose. The fundamentals of physics and applied mathematics, in particular turbulence and turbulent mixing, are at the core of my scientific learning, thinking and research.

● The von Kármán-Prandtl universal logarithmic law
My earliest interest in turbulence, mainly the turbulent boundary layer and the von Kármán-Prandtl universal logarithmic law in the wall-region of wall-bounded turbulent shear flow, started in December 1991, when I conducted a laboratory flume study of the vertical structure of unidirectional flow within and above a saltmarsh canopy at the University of Hull, England. In 1992, I did the second similar work, i.e. a laboratory flume study of vegetated flow structures, at the University of Reading, England. Results show an interesting feature, i.e. a reversal of the flow velocity gradient, resulting in a secondary flow velocity maximum in the lower part of the canopy. In 2000, I understood that this secondary flow velocity maximum is caused by the interfacial waves due to the flexibilities of canopies. However, the physics of this secondary flow velocity maximum is still unclear.

● The zero-equation turbulence model (Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis)
My interest in turbulence, mainly eddy viscosity and Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis, was stimulated in 1999, when I was learning how to model vertical profiles of current velocity and suspended sediment concentration in tidal estuaries at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

● The Kolmogorov-Obukhov scaling laws
I first learned about the Kolmogorov-Obukhov energy spectrum, E(k){proportional_to}k{sup -5/3}, when I was attending the IUTAM Summer School on “Statistical and Hierarchical Structures in Turbulence”, in Room 434, Department of Mechanical and Engineering Science, State Key Laboratory for Studies of Turbulence and Complex Systems, Peking University, China, on 3-9 August 2001. I was extremely happy to restudy the Kolmogorov-Obukhov scaling laws for the local structure of developed turbulent flow after I came back to Shanghai from Cambridge, England, in 2014. In December 2017, I surprisingly learned from William Kenneth George that K41 is wrong. In the fall of 2018, I learned from Qian Jian about the finite Reynolds number effect of turbulence which accounts for K62's anomalous scaling. In June and August 2019, I surprisingly learned from Robert Antonia that it is K62 that is fundamentally flawed and it is a pity that Kolmogorov felt the need to correct K41.

● The two-equation turbulence model (mainly the k-ε model of turbulence)
My interest in the two-equation turbulence model, mainly the k-ε model of turbulence, became manifest in 2002, when I was learning about modeling of the wave and current boundary layer structure at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

● The statistical mechanics of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence
I became interested in the statistical mechanics of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence in November 2012, when I carried out laboratory experiments on oscillating grid generated turbulence and turbulent mixing in a mean shear-free stably-stratified two-layer fluid at The G.K. Batchelor Laboratory, Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge, England.

● Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT)
I became interested in rapid distortion theory (RDT) after I came back to Shanghai from Cambridge, England, when I was learning how to theoretically study the effect of the density interface on the turbulence in a mean shear-free stably-stratified two-layer fluid in September 2015.

● Vortex (a major component of turbulent flow)
I became interested in vorticity in 2016 when I was learning about the flow structure within the curved tidal channel at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

Luckily, I have been doing what I have most wanted to do.
