ProfessorN.HafzreceivedhisPh.D.inQuantumEngineeringandSystemsScience(NuclearEngineering)inSept.2001fromtheUniversityofTokyo.Hehadavisitingresearchposition(2002-2006)atKoreaElectrotechnologyResearchInstituteandwasaSeniorResearchStaffScientist(2006-March2011)atGwangjuInstituteofScienceandTechnologyinSouthKorea.Hehasbeenworkinginthefieldoflaser-plasmaacceleration(LPA)ofelectronbeamsusingtable-topterawattlasers.Recently,N.Hafzandcolleagues[7]presentedresultsfromoneofthesmallestandsimplestlaser-basedacceleratorsdevelopedsofar.Thedrivingforceforthistypeofaccelerationisthelaser’sradiationpressureandtheaccelerationmediumisagaseous(HorHe)underdenseplasma.IncontrarytotheRF-basedconventionalacceleratortechniques,LPAprovidesextremelycompacthigh-energyandqualityelectronaccelerators,thankstotheextremely-intenseplasmawaves(~1GV/m).Therefore,thistechnologyholdsagreatpotentialfordownsizingfuturehigh-energyacceleratorsforhigh-energyphysicsapplications.Inaddition,table-topLPAcouldprovidecheapandcompactacceleratorsforvariousapplicationsinscience,agriculture,medicineandtechnology.AtSJTU,acompactmulti-hunderedterawattlasersystemisavailableforperformingresearchonLPAofelectronsaswellasionaccelerationandphotons.AnimmediategoalforProf.HafzandhiscolleaguesatSJTUistogetreliableandhigh-qualitybeamsfromtheLPAforvariousapplications.
