Title: Introduction of Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) of Osaka University

Speaker: Prof. Kodama

Abstract: Introduction of the history and new development of ILE.

KODAMA Ryosuke (兒玉了祐):Ryosuke Kodama is a Professor of Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He also is a Professor and Director of Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University. He studied electrical engineering and science at Osaka University, earning his B.S. degree in 1985, his M.S. degree in 1987, and his Ph.D. degree in 1990. He was a visiting researcher at Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University and Central Laser Facility, Rutherford Appleton in UK from 1990 to 1992, an assistant professor from 1993 to 1999 and an associate professor from 2000 to 2004 at Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University in Japan. He is now exploring high energy density science in methods of introducing a Plasma Photonics concept to control intense light and high energy density charged particles, including studies on the fast ignition concept in laser fusion and high energy density matter such as high pressure matter and warm dense matter. Professor Kodama received a Research Fellowships for Young Scientists of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 1988, JSPS Special Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research Abroad in 1990. He also received the Daiwa Award from the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in 1993, the Incentive Awards from the Japan Laser Society in 2002, the Excellence of Fusion Engineering Awards from the USA Fusion Power Associates in 2002, the Minister Prize on Science and Technology from the MEXT Japan in 2005, and The JSPS Prize from the JSPS in 2006.

Title: Exploring High Pulse Energy, High Rep. Rate Laser in the Next Generation

Speaker: Prof. Kawanaka

Abstract: High-power lasers has been actively developed expanding its pulse duration range from nanosecond to femtosecond to explore advanced application fields such like laser peening, particle acceleration, neutron source, cancer therapy and so on. Both high pulse energy and repeatability are required strongly in such application fields. Our recent laser development and future plan will be shown.

KAWANAKA Junji (河仲 准二): He got the Doctor of Science from University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo with the study of laser-cooled neutral atoms and their collision at 1993. Then he worked about coherent and incoherent source in VUV by using rare gas excimers pumped by discharge or fs-lasers at Miyazaki University. He moved at Kansai Photon Science Institute of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (KPSI/JAERI, it's QST now). His work is diode-pumped solid-state fs ultarshort lasers with Yb-doped materials. Also, his research go for the next generation of high power lasers with both high pulse energy and repeatable operation simultaneously, based on DPSSL, in ns to fs pulse duration combining optical parametric amplification (OPA), till now at Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University (ILE/Osaka Univ.).

Title:High Power 3 μm Erbium Fiber Lasers and Their Industrial Applications

Speaker: Prof. Shigeki
Abstract: High power lasers with wavelengths around 3 μm have many potential applications, for example, in laser processing for materials which have low absorption at the near-infrared and the visible wavelength range, and in dentistry and surgery because the absorption coefficient of biological tissue containing water is very high at around 3μm. Recently, output power and efficiency of Er-doped fluoride-glass fiber lasers with a wavelength of 2.8 μm have been significantly improved. Here, we review briefly the high-power 2.8 μm Er-doped fiber lasers and their application of laser processing.

SHIGEKI Tokita is an associate professor of the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE), Osaka University. After receiving his Dr. Eng. from the Osaka University in 2006, he was an assistant professor at the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University in 2006–2013. His research interests are in high-power fiber lasers and laser-plasma interactions. He conducts research in efficient high-average-power Yb-doped lasers, Er-doped mid-infrared fiber lasers, control of energetic electron beam produced by ultrahigh-intensity laser pulses and strong terahertz wave generation by laser-plasma interactions. He is also contributing the project to upgrade the LFEX petawatt laser system.
