研究工作ResearchInterests
Visualperceptionhasheldaspecialpointoffascinationwithphilosophersandscientistsforthousandsofyears.Whatappearstousaneffortlesstask,theopeningofoureyes,engagesanextensiveandanatomicallycomplexnetworkofbrainareas.Itisthesebrainareaswhichaffordus,asAristotlephrasesit,thedelightandexploratorypowerofseeing.Neuroscientistsareslowlyunravelingthiscomplexitywithaneyetobothpureknowledgeofourdominantsense,andalsoitsgatewaystatustocognitionanddisease.Ourlaboratoryfocusesontheneuralcircuitryandfunctionalorganizationofsomevisualperceptualphenomena.Ourlabbringstogetherarangeofmulti-disciplinarytechniques,includinginvivodualopticalimaging,invivosimultaneousmulti-singleunitrecordingofdifferentcorticalbrainareasalongwithmulti-iontophoreticdrugapplication.Bothanesthetizedandawakeanimalpreparationsarecarriedoutinourlab.
1.Theneuralmechanismsofvisualperceptualillusionandfilling-in:
Visualillusionandfilling-indramaticallyrevealsthedissociationbetweentheretinalinputandthepercept,andraisesfundamentalquestionsabouthowthesetworelatetoeachother.Fillinginoccursbothinnormalandpathologicalvision,anditsspatiotemporalcharacteristicssuggestmultiplelevelsofvisualsysteminteraction.Detailsoftheseneuralinteractionsinearlyvisualareasandbetweenhigherandlowerareasaretheimportantquestionstobestudied.Specifically,ourlaboratoryaskswhatthefunctionalroleofhigherordervisualareasuchasV4/MTinillusoryandkineticcontourperceptionis.
2.Theneuralcircuitryandfunctionorganizationoffeedbackinthecentralvisualsystem:
Oneofthemostinterestingchallengesinvisionthereforeistounraveltheroleoftheseextensivefeedbacksystemsthatparalleltheascendingfeed-forwardpathways.TheroleofLayer6corticalfeedbackcellsinvisualprocessingisofparticularappeal,forLayer6cellsinthevisualcortexsitinacrucialplaceinthecircuitryinvolvedintheearlyprocessingofthevisualinputinhighermammalssuchascatsandprimates.Ourinterestslieinunderstandinghowthesecellsmaygateandmodulatetheinformationflowthroughthevisualhierarchy.
3.Theneuralmechanismsofmotionperception:AfunctionalstudyofinteractionsbetweenV1/V2andMTintheprimate:
Visualmovementsareprocessedprimarilybyamagnocellulardominatedstream(thoughthereisanincreasingappreciationofacontributionbytheparvocellularsystem)throughthelateralgeniculate(LGN),visualcorticesV1/V2,andonintoV5/MT.Howthisintegrationandsegregationofmotionsignalstakesplaceisstillonlypartiallyunderstood.TheroleplayedbyMTinmotionintegrationisthemainfocusofthisstudy.

个人简介王伟博士,男,1993年于中国科学技术大学获得理学硕士学位,1993-1995年在北京医科大学儿童视觉研究中心任助理研究员,1998年于中国科学技术大学获得理学博士学位。1998-2006年先后在伦敦大学学院眼科所视觉神经科学系、曼切斯特理工大学检眼科学与神经科学系以及曼切斯特大学生命科学系从事博士后研究,2006-2007年任曼切斯特大学生命科学系独立研究员(TheWellcomeTrustCareerDevelopmentFellowshipAward,Independent,TenureTrack)。2007年起任中国科学院上海生命科学研究院神经科学研究所研究员、博士生导师、研究组组长。
