ResearchInterestsandfuturedirections
Thesensorysystemsofanimaldetectbothphysicalandchemicalcuesintheenvironmentandplaycriticalrolesinindividualbehaviors(suchasfeeding,avoidingandescaping)andsocialbehaviors(suchasmating,caringandaggression).Becauseofitssimplicityandamenabilitytomolecular,geneticandelectrophysiologicalmanipulations,thesensorysystemsofthefruitfly--Drosophilamelanogasterprovideanidealexperimentalsystemtostudyhowinformationoftheexternalenvironmentisrepresented,processedandintergratedinthebrain.Theresearchinourlabisfocusedonunderstandinghowanimalbehaviorisdeterminedbysensoryinputsatthelevelofneuralcircuitry.
Sensorysignalprocessingintheflybrain.
Althoughtheprojectionpatternsoftheprimarysensoryneurons(orthesecondaryneurons)ofseveralsensorysystemsofthefruitflyaremapped,therestofthesensory-tomotorcircuitsislargelyunknown.Completelydissectingthesensoryneuralcircuitswillprovideinsighttoourprofoundunderstandingoftheorganizationofthesensoryprocessingcomponentsandthemechanismsofanimalbehavior.Aseriesofexperimentscombiningmolecular,genetic,andbehavioralapproachesaredesignedtoelucidatethesensoryneuralcircuit.Furthermore,inordertomechanisticallyunderstandhowexternalinformationisencodedinthesensoryprojectionpatternsandinhigherbraincenters,wehavetorelatetheanatomyofthesensorysystemstotheactivitiesofthesensorycircuits.Electrophysiologicalrecordingwillbeconductedintheflybraintocollectdataforhelpingustounderstandthemechanismofsensorycodingandprocessing.
Integrationofsensoryinputsintheflybrain
Manysensorysystemsareinvolvedinasingleanimalbehavioralresponsetotheenvironment.Forinstance,thefeeding,matingoravoidingbehaviorsofthefruitflyaremediatedbythesummationofdifferenttypesofstimuli,suchasthesmell,taste,textureandshapeofanobject.Thus,itisreasonabletopredictthatthereareanatomicalstructuresintheflybrainresponsibleforthecross-talkofdifferenttypesofsensorysignals,andtothecoordinationofmotoroutputs.Olfaction-TasteorOlfaction-Taste-Visioncross-modalitybehaviorparadigms,inparalleltoelectrophysiologicalrecording,willbeestablishedtounderstandthemechanismunderlyingtheintegrationofdifferentsensoryinputs.
Behavioralgeneticsofthemechanismofanimalbehavior.
Geneticscreeningisapowerfulmeanstoidentifycandidategenesthatareinvolvedincomplexanimalrecognitionbehaviors,suchaslearningandmemory.Althoughthefocusofourresearchistounderstandhowanimalbehaviorisdeterminedattheneuralcircuitrylevel,identificationofgenesinvolvedinaspecificanimalbehaviorwillbegreatlyhelpfultousinunderstandingthefunctionandorganizationoftheneuralcircuits.Largescalemutagenesis,couplewithbehavioralscreeningwillbecarriedouttoidentifycandidategenesthatarespecificallyinvolvedincertaintypesofanimalbehaviors.Studiesonhowthosecandidategenescouldinfluenceanimalbehaviorwillbefollowed.
