Ng (吴恒亮)- graduated in University of Manitoba (Canada), and completed two years postdoctoral work at the University of Oxford before joining the Physics Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991. He was the Associate Dean (Students Affair) in the Faculty of Science from 2008 to 2015 before being the Chairman of the Physics Department in 2015. His current interests include biomorphic materials for photo-catalysis, water treatments, and energy storage devices.
主讲内容:As the demands for energy supplies are growing, there is an urgent need to develop high-performance, sustainable and low cost energy storage systems. The supercapacitors (SCs), lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) can efficiently store and deliver electrical energy and current. The electrochemical performances of SCs LIBs and SIBs are intimately depended on their electrode materials. However, current electrode materials are still facing the problems of structure degradation, low conductivity, and volume variation during cycling. In order to overcome these challenges, efforts have to be placed on the further development of the novel electro-active materials with higher capacitance and longer cycling stability for SCs, LIBs and SIBs application. Herein, we have provided the alternative designs and routes in the fabrication of nanostructure electrode materials with superior electrochemical performance. For examples: CoO/carbon electrode had exhibited excellent specific capacitance of 648 Fg-1 for SCs, Fe3O4/carbon@graphene foam composite electrode for the use as LIB anode delivered a reversible capacity of 1112 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles, and SnO2/activated carbon fiber anode showed superior stability within 200 cycles for SIBs. These fabrication processes is bio-inspired and cost-effective. The approach in this work can be extended to synthesize other electrode materials for energy storage devices.
