1964年毕业于中国科学技术大学应用地球物理系,1968年毕业于中科院大气物理研究所中期预报研究生专业。现任南京大学大气科学系教授、博士生导师、中国气象学会第25届常务理事、中国气象学会热带气象学委员会副主任、江苏省气象学会气候与长期预报委员会主任。先后在中科院兰州高原大气物理研究所、南京大学以及美国芝加哥大学和海军研究生院长期从事数值天气预报、大气环流和气候数值模拟的研究和教学。
1978年以来,在国内外学术刊物上发表科学论文230余篇(包括合作论文),合作出版专著4本。已招收硕士生49名(获学位28名)、博士生24名(获学位16名)。在青藏高原等大地形的处理方法和气候效应、大气环流模式和区域气候模式设计、模式物理过程参数化和数值模拟等方面有多年经验。近年来,在南海季风和东亚季风、南亚高压、海气相互作用和青藏高原热力效应等方面进行了深入的诊断和数值研究。
曾获1978年全国科学大会奖,1984年中科院重大科技成果二等奖,1988年国家教委科技进步二等奖,1992年江苏省科技进步二等奖。1992年获政府特殊津贴。1982年获甘肃省外事工作先进个人称号,1995年获江苏省优秀研究生教师和江苏省教育系统科技先进个人称号。2003年获教育部科技进步一等奖(第二完成人)。
已培养硕士30余名、博士12名。指导的博士论文"南亚高压的演变规律、机制及对区域气候的影响"和"南海季风区海气相互作用研究、区域海气耦合模式的研制及夏季风的模拟"相继获得2000和2001年南京大学"优秀博士论文奖"。
