Peter Hasdell is an architect, urbanist, artist and academic. A graduate from the University of Sydney and the prestigious Architectural Association in London. He has lived, taught and practiced in Australia, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Canada, Japan and China. He has been based in HK since 2007 where he is a co-director of the architectural practice D+A h.q. Ltd. focusing on architecture and urban (master-planning) projects in China and SE Asia. His professional practice has included: strategic planning concerns on a national scale (infrastructure planning models in Switzerland), urban planning and consultancies for various cities in Europe and China and various projects (architecture and master-planning) in China including the design and planning for campus for the Chinese Academy of Science and two other university masterplans, various mixed-use developments and resort complexes, cultural and community projects, as well as cultural and public art projects (Sweden and the UK). He has also made and exhibited a variety of interactive art projects and interactive installations.
Peter has taught extensively in Europe, North America and Asia since 1994 at architecture, planning and design schools including the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College of London), The Berlage Institute in Amsterdam (now part of TU Delft), KTH Architecture School in Stockholm, Columbia University Architecture School (New York), Architecture School East London University, Architecture and Design Department at Kingston University, School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, HKU Architecture School and University of Manitoba.
Peter has been a key research associate of high profile research institutes since 1994including CHORA Institute of Architecture and Urbanism, London, and the Centre for Architecture Structures and Technology (C.A.S.T.), Manitoba. He founded and directed Architecture and Urban Research Lab (A+URL), Stockholm; as well as Pneuma Open Source Platform in Canada focused on interactive design ecosystems. He currently directs In-situ Project http://insitu-project.com/ a research by design platform he founded focusing on sustainable community development, to date it has co-designed and constructed several projects in rural China. His research work investigates metabolic systems, adaptive and co-evolutionary cities and architecture on the scales of the city (city as a life form, urban ecology), and as architecture (interactive and responsive architectures) Recent publications include Border Ecologies: Hong Kong’s Mainland Frontier, Birkhauser 2016 investigating the Frontier Closed Area between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
