Dr. George Liu joined the Department of Land Surveying & Geo-Informatics (LSGI), Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University(PolyU) on June 24, 2009. He and his family arrived at Hong Kong on June 23, 2009 from Calgary, Canada after George had lived, worked, and studied in Calgary for nearly 10 years. Hong Kong is a quite dynamic city and is quite different from Calgary. One most distinct difference is the weather.

Research Interests:

·     Assimilating of atmospheric water vapor into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models for better weather forecasting

·     Calibrating remote sensing satellites to retrieve high-accuracy water vapor based on ground-based data

·     Oceanic GNSS observations for atmospheric and geodetic applications

·     Oceanic observation of atmospheric water vapor, temperature, etc for NWP

·     Ground-based, ocean-based, and space-based atmospheric water vapor observation and modeling using GNSS, remote sensing satellites and other sensors

·     Ground-based, ocean-based, and space-based ionospheric total electron contents (TEC) and scintillation observation and monitoring

·     Novel algorithms for GNSS precise Positioning, Navigation, Velocity, Timing (PNaVT)

·     Observation and monitoring of global warming and climate change using geodetic, remote sensing and geomatics techniques

·     Other kinds of interesting research topics

PhD students are welcome:

·     All of my PhD students will be offered a full PhD scholarship, which is more than sufficient to live a reasonably good life in Hong Kong and pay the tuition.

·     Normally, the Micro-LARGE Lab only admits MSc students graduated with a MSc degree. In exceptional cases, BSc graduates without MSc degree are admitted too. You are welcome to contact Dr. Liu before your application.

·     Three types of PhD scholarships are available at PolyU:

o  (1) RGC PhD Fellowship, offered by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), monthly scholarship HK$25,800, for 36-48 months;

o  (2) PolyU PhD Scholarships, offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, monthly scholarship HK18,100, for 36-48 months;

o  (3) Project-based PhD Scholarships, offered by individual professor’s research project, monthly scholarship HK$18,100, for 36-48 months.

·     Other expenses such as computers, international student exchange program (PhD attachment program), domestic and international conferences and summer schools will also be supported by the university or the supervisor.

·     Tuition is waived if you are a holder of Hong Kong Permanent Residency or of the RGC PhD Fellowship.

[Note to prospective MSc/MPhil/PhD Students, Visiting Students, Postdoc Fellows]

The Micro-LARGE group always (year-round) looks for top excellent, self-motivated students and researchers to join the group.

Premium scholarships will be offered to those successful applicants.

Please always contact Dr. Liu if you want more information or have questions.

We are more concerned with the following quality of applicants: Academic background, Publication records, Computer language skills (e.g. C++, Matlab, Fortran), English language skills, Inter-person communication skills.

For MSc/MPhil/PhD students to register a degree at PolyU, the minimum English requirement is:

Applicants who have not obtained a degree from an English-teaching university, the minimum English requirement is:
