I am an assistant professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design a the University of Hong Kong. I study the human-built environment interactions through the lens of “urban new data”, i.e., social media, POI, behavioural data, and wellbeing. I also study sustainable and intelligent design, including urban environment and energy modelling and design optimization based on artificial intelligence. I have developed a series of design and planning software tools for urban heat island mitigation, building energy efficiency, traffic noise mitigation, and enhance of occupant thermal comfort. These software tools have been applied in real-world projects in Hong Kong, Singapore, mainland China, the US, among others.
I teach lecture-based courses on urban theories, technologies, and design studios in Hong Kong and overseas context. I coordinate the thesis project and admission for the Master of Urban Design Programme (MUD), and I co-developed the MUD curriculum in my capacity as the Assistant Programme Director. I am a LEED accredited professional, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and a former member of the board of directors of the International Association for China Planning. I served as the organization committee on the International Society of City and Regional Planners and Global Heat Health Information Network. Prior to joining HKU, I worked as an urban designer at Sasaki Associates Inc. on many award-winning projects recognized by the Society of College and University Planning, International Downtown Association, the American Institute of Architects, and the Boston Society of Architects.? I hold a Doctor of Design from Harvard University, a Master in City Planning from MIT, a Master and a Bachelor in Architecture from Tsinghua University.
