This presentation focuses on the blended learning programmes from the Goethe-Institut (redaktion-D A1 and A2 level) and the Wall Street Institute of English (Survival and Way Stage level). It compares the aims and methods, the encounters with the tutor and the assignments in the tutorial. It shows a wide range of work-orientated material, which is effective in the development of learner autonomy. Besides, it questions the success rate and long-term motivation for the self-directed language learner. It values project-based assignments and multi-media skills as future tools to learn easily. During the interaction with the tutor, it asks for strategies to develop a warm, trustful relationship with the learners.
