BiographyDr. Danny SC NG is a clinician scientist with expertise in retinal disease and vitreoretinal surgery.? Prior to medical school, he studied Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, United States, where he graduated with honors. As an academic ophthalmologist, Dr. NG is devoted to training and education. He has taken up the predominant task of implementing unprecedented, structured simulation training for residents and fellows in Hong Kong as Vice Director of the CUHK Jockey Club Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Programme (CUHK JC OMTP).
Dr. NG had more than 50 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, authored 3 book chapters, delivered over 40 conference papers and presented in over 25 invited lectures at international scientific congresses.? He is the principal investigator and grant holder of a number of vigorous research programmes leading to robust characterisation of retinal diseases phenotypes and clinical trials to optimise vision in patients. Dr. NG is an Executive Committee Member at the Clinical Trials Centre and participated in over 15 sponsored clinical trials.
Dr. NG was the recipient of the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society Leadership Development Program Gold Medal Award and Best Self-Initiated Project Award in 2018. ?He was also the recipient of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.? His research was recognized by the Best Scientific Poster Award at the 40th Annual Macular Society.? He served in scientific committees at the World Ophthalmology Congress, Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congresses and Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society Congresses.
As a professional ophthalmologist, Dr. NG is devoted to public clinical service at the CUHK Eye Centre and Hong Kong Eye Hospital.? He is proficient in cataract surgery, vitrectomy, macular surgery and eyelid surgery.? During subspecialty fellowship, Dr. NG had overseas training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, United States, Samsung Medical Centre, South Korea, and Singapore National Eye Centre.

Research Highlights
Research ProgrammesThe clinical safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical and laser interventions in medical retina diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).
Imaging techniques of the choroid and its morphological changes.
Imaging studies and clinical interventions in pathologic myopia.
Phenotype-genotype studies of the role of angiogenesis in medical retina diseases and aging.
The translational benefits of Virtual Reality phacoemulsification cataract extraction simulation training on patient surgical outcomes

Results of NoteMacular diseases with predilection to Asians, including polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), which are especially prevalent in Chinese as compared to Caucasians. Phenotypic studies using advanced ophthalmic imaging with novel computer analytic techniques to reveal microstructure alterations of the choroid, retina and retinal pigment epithelium to elucidate their pathogenic processes. This research area has gained international reputation given our effective detection and treatment of one of the largest study cohorts of PCV and CSCR in the world.
Identification of biomarkers for optimisation of therapeutic response in retinal diseases. Morphology study of choroidal neovascular complex associates with treatment outcomes in pathologic myopia and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). The prime objective is to advance early detection for effective treatment.
Predictors on the natural course of retinal microvascular diseases and early intervention strategies. Optical coherence tomography angiography metrics reveal the progression of retinal microaniopathy. We are establishing effective treatment protocols to prevent blinding outcomes of these patients
Research on innovative technology for ophthalmic microsurgical education and its translation into enhancing patient outcomes. Cost-effective strategies in phacoemulsification cataract extraction surgical simulation training for residents have been established.
