摘要Background: Listeners have judged the production of Cantonese tones by paediatric cochlear implant (CI) users as less accurate than that of normally-hearing (NH) children (Lee et al., 2007; Lee et al., 2010). In this study, tone production is acoustically analysed and compared between paediatric CI users and a group of NH peers.
Methodology: 41 children were recruited in total. 10 children received CIs at or before two years of age (Early CI group) and 13 were implanted after two years of age (Late CI group). 18 NH children formed a control group. Tones were elicited using a picture naming task.
Results: Preliminary results were obtained from three speakers from each group. Fundamental frequency (F0) contours were time normalised and F0 values were extracted at ten time-points and converted to a logarithm-based T value. A Two-Way Analysis of Variance was conducted on the F0 values for each tone, with Group and Time as fixed factors. Results indicated a significant effect of Group for all tones except tone 4 (p < .001), and of Time for tone 2 (p < .002), tone 5 (p < .001) and tone 4 (p < .001). Post-hoc Tukey HSD tests indicated that the F0 values of the CI Late group differed more from the NH productions than those of the CI Early group.
Conclusion: Compared to the Late CI group’s tones, the tones produced by the Early CI group are more similar to those of the NH children. Earlier implantation may provide benefit to tone production.
