摘要Background: This research aims at developing a language test with sound psychometric properties in assessing the language ability of preschoolers in Macau.
Methodology: A pool of 234 items were developed and individually tested on 228 children aged 24-47 months from 8 day care centres over Macau. Data collected were subjected to reliability and validation evaluation including Cronbach’s alpha, intra-class correlation and correlation coefficients. Rasch analyses including Differential Item Functioning, fit statistics, Rasch Factor Analysis were employed to assess item and test quality.
Results: Two test versions, LF-118 and SF-35, were developed. LF-118 is a long form with 118 items while SF-35 is the short form with 35 items. The following is a summary of the psychometric evaluation of the two forms.

Conclusion: A Cantonese language screening scale (MacCLASS-P) with a long form for more detailed information on different linguistic aspects and a short form for quicker test implementation is developed. Psychometric analysis confirms that the test possesses satisfactory reliability and validity in evaluating the language ability of young children.
