摘要Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common childhood condition. Although the figure for the prevalence of OME is widely known in Caucasian children, figures are lacking for Chinese children. A. cross-sectional screening of primary one school children was undertaken within a period of 3 months in Hong Kong. Tympanometry, otoscopy and audiometry were used to diagnose OME. Of 3,147 children enrolled, 2,72http://aims.cuhk.edu.hk/converis/portal/Publication/0 (86.4%) consented for participation in the study and 53 (1.95%, 95% C.I. 1.43%, 2.47% point prevalence) were diagnosed and confirmed to have OME. A pilot study of school children attending 3 international schools was also performed over the same period with 9/177 (5.1% point prevalence) confirmed to have OME. There is a low but significant prevalence of OME among Chinese children in Hong Kong. Further studies will be necessary to identify reasons for the difference and the importance of the various factors relating to the causes of OME.
