摘要Introduction: Cervical cancer can be effectively detected and prevented by cancer screening (pap test). However the pap test uptake rate among ethnic minority is relatively low when compared to the general population. They often experiences different barriers to screening and in fact, the existing health care services do not specifically addressing their needs.Method: A cross -sectional study , using a survey with validated 14- item Perceived Barriers to screening subscale, was conducted among South Asian women. South Asian women aged 21 or above and without history of cervical cancer were included in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusting for demographic variables was used to examine the association between perceived barriers to screening and pap test uptake. Result : A total of 776 South Asian women participated in the study. Four items were identified to be South Asian women ’s perceived barriers to cervical cancer screening . These items concerned about their lack of understanding about the pap test procedure , duration and venue for pap test, and did not need the test when they felt okay. Discussion : To tackle their barriers to screening, the following strategies are used: 1) increase their knowledge of the disease such as risk factors, signs and symptoms, 2) illustrate the current recommendation of pap test in Hong Kong by ‘ who ’ and ‘when ’, 3) provide de tails about the pap test procedure, the approximate time of procedure and live demonstration of the equipment used, 4) provide addresses and phone number of the centres providing pap test that are available in their districts.
