摘要Purpose/Objective: The study aims at exploring an understanding the needs of the parents of pediatric cancer patients in Hong Kong.

Background/Rationale: Parents experience high level of stress, distress and caregiving burden in caring child with
cancer. The physical and psychological health of the parents greatly affect their care delivered to the cancer child,
and they require supportive interventions to deal with caregiving demands. In order to provide most suitable supportive interventions to the parents, it is crucial to understand their supportive care needs.

Description/Methods/Evaluation: Qualitative study design was employed. The target population were the parents
of children diagnosed with cancer. Other inclusion criteria include: 1) aged above 18; 2) the child being cared for are
aged under 19; 3) able to communicate in Chinese. Semistructured interviews were conducted to identify the needs
of the informal caregivers. The data were analyzed by content analysis.

Outcome/Results/Findings: Fourteen parents recruited from 5 public hospitals by purposive sampling and were interviewed. Supportive care needs can be classified into 3 categories: 1) information needs, 2) psychosocial needs, 3) resources needs. Parents were revealed to be lack of knowledge in pediatric cancer and desired to acquire
more information in disease knowledge, nutritional and practical information. They also expressed peer support
and experiences from other parents were valuable and experience sharing was an effective means to relieve
psychological stress. Religious support also played an important role in supporting the caregivers psychologically.
Caregivers also mentioned community and financial resources were inadequate.

Conclusion/Discussion: The current study explored the needs of the parental caregivers through in-depth interviews.
Parents desired to have more information and psychosocial support. They also demanded for more resources to help
them go through the disease trajectory.

Implications for Nursing: The supportive care needs of parents of pediatric patients identified in this study can facilitate future development of interventions to parents in Hong Kong
