摘要The French colonizers of Vietnam justified their rule by means of the mission civilisatrice, an ideological tool that masked imperial appropriation as an act of cultural largesse. Most scholars working on the French colonization of Southeast Asia have focused on the construction of transportation networks, urban infrastructure, and public education systems as typical examples of "civilizing" activities that benefited. the colonizers as much as the colonized. However, the French also employed the performing arts-music in particular-as part of their attempt to establish control over the indigenous population. An excellent instance of this process was the establishment in Hanoi of the French Conservatory of the Far East (Conservatoire Francais d'Extreme-Orient) Although private instruction in Western music was available to the residents of Hanoi soon after the conquest of northern Vietnam in the 188http://aims.cuhk.edu.hk/converis/portal/Publication/0s, it was not until the 192http://aims.cuhk.edu.hk/converis/portal/Publication/0s that calls for a school of music, intended in part for the instruction of local Vietnamese, were heeded. The story of this short-lived enterprise, which survived from 1927 to 193http://aims.cuhk.edu.hk/converis/portal/Publication/0, offers us a fascinating glimpse inside colonial Hanoi, Privately run but officially sanctioned, the Conservatory was doomed from the start owing to governmental restrictions, an insufficient subvention, and the limited services it could offer. Yet the enthusiasm with which the press greeted the institution upon its opening and the disappointment registered as it closed highlight the tension between rhetoric and praxis in the colonial project.. Thus, the history of the Conservatory reveals the fragility of the. mission civilisatrice and the inherent limitations of French imperial power in Asia.
