Background Dr Daniel C. Howe is an artist, researcher, and critical technologist whose work focuses on the interrelationships between networks, language, and politics. His hybrid collaborative practice explores the nature of algorithms and their impact on human values like autonomy, diversity, privacy and freedom. He has been an open-source advocate and contributor to dozens of socially-engaged software projects over the past two decades. His outputs include software interventions (AdNauseam, TrackMeNot, AdLiPo), art installations (The Readers Project, the Architecture of Association, Automatype), algorithmically-generated text and sound (How It Is in Common Tongues, Minor Distance), and computational tools for artists (RiTa, Dialogic, Tweeter).
Howe holds a PhD in Computer Science from NYU's Courant Institute and an MFA in Digital Literature from Brown University. Before joining the faculty at the School of Creative Media, he was a Computing Innovations Fellow and Visiting Professor at Brown, and taught in Rhode Island School of Design's Digital+Media program. He currently divides his time between Hong Kong and New York.
