Background Ms Rita Hui is a film director. Her works have received accolades from the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards, including Ah Ming (Distinguished Award, 1996), She Makes Me Wanna Die (Silver Award, 1998) and Invisible City (Wall) (Silver Award, 1998). Alice in Wonderland was shown at the Hong Kong Arts Centre’s Independent Yours programme. She made a foray into theatre in 2001, creating Tango of Water Sleeves and Beautiful Project, and video work Chionanthus Retusus. Her first video installation XX was shown at the Macau Old Ladies House for ‘Wo…man’ Feminine Art festival. Other video works include IdoLetHerMyHeadHave (2004), Red Riding Hood (2005) and RED (2006), the latter being her RMIT Master programme final project. Her first feature film Dead Slowly was funded by the Arts Development Council and screened at the Busan International Film Festival (2009) New Currents Section and at the Hong Kong Asian Independent Film Festival. In 2013, her second feature film Keening Woman was selected for A Window on Asian Cinema section at the Busan International Film Festival.
Hui graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Department of Film & TV with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She received a Master of Art in Women’s Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004 and a Master of Fine Art jointly offered by the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University (Australia) in 2007.
