City University of Hong Kong’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, in collaboration with the University of Stirling (Scotland), will be introducing an MSc in Aquatic Production and Veterinary Health in September 2018. The programme will be presented by the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health. The main objective of the programme is to give students training in the wide range of disciplines and skills necessary for the investigation, prevention and control of aquatic animal diseases. Student will gain an understanding of the biology, husbandry and environment of farmed aquatic species, in addition to specialist expertise in aquatic animal diseases. The graduates will be able to appraise aquaculture operations and contribute to management decision making. It is also intended to prepare students who later plan to pursue a PhD in the area of aquacultural science.
To be eligible for admission, an applicant must:
- Hold a recognized bachelor’s degree of one of the universities in Hong Kong or from any overseas institutions recognized for this purpose by the University; or
- Hold other such qualifications as deemed acceptable by the University as equivalent to the above.
Preference may be given to applicants with academic background in biology, marine science, environmental science, and/or veterinary science.
Language Proficiency
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is NOT English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
- A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
- An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS); or
- A score of 500 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Mainland China*; or
- Other equivalent qualifications
*Applicants holding the old CET-6 result must attain a pass in the new test
Core Courses (45 credit units)
There are no electives and students have to take all core courses (total 45 credit units). The core courses will be offered in Semesters A, B and Summer Term.

- The full MSc in Aquatic Production and Veterinary Health requires 45 credit units, with the completion of taught courses plus a MSc Research Project. Students who have successfully completed 30 credit units of taught courses, and elected not to pursue for the Master's degree are eligible for applying the intermediate award of Postgraduate Diploma in Aquatic Production and Veterinary Health.
- This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance of the HKSAR (Ref. no. 452723 for MSc/ Ref. no. 452755 for PGD* as the intermediate award). It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.
