The Sino-German Workshop on “Multiscale spatial computational systems biology” (MSCSB2015) funded by The Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (Grant no. GZ1203) will be held in Beijing, China on October 8-12, 2015. The MSCSB2015 is jointly held by Harbin Institute of Technology and Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus – Senftenberg.

Research subjectThis workshop will explore challenges arising from the need to model and analyze complex biological systems at multiple scales (spatial and temporal), and falls within the general remit of Computational Systems Biology.

Multiscale modeling goes beyond the traditional approach of modeling at just one spatial/temporal scale. Until now, most models have largely ignored locality within the cell, or cell-cell interactions. However, with the insight that spatial phenomena like localization and crowding have a considerable influence on reaction processes, and many processes cannot be truthfully understood with reference to one organization level only (intra- or inter-cellular dynamics), the need for effective and efficient modeling and simulation approaches arises.

The challenges for computer sciences and mathematics include the development of suitable modeling approaches and associated tools to create coherent descriptions of biological systems by integrating several spatial and/or temporal scales, and methods for the simulation and analysis of these models.

The overall motivation for this workshop is the exchange of the most recent advances in these methods, to explore the current challenges, and to identify the most urgent future directions.

The workshop brings together researchers working on modeling and simulation of biological systems in China and Germany, complemented by close collaborators from UK and Egypt (one from each country). This workshop will greatly strengthen the existing collaborations between China and Germany and most probably result in new academic collaborations and exchanges.
