Moving beyond description: Statistical and causal inference for social media data

The goal of this project is to develop and apply a new class of statistical and causal inference models for human interactions and their impacts on health and health-related behavioral studies that integrate online social media information to understand the roles of human interaction on a) disease spread, b) mental health in a hard-to-reach population, and c) presence and extent of “natural helping” in promoting wellness and reducing norms supporting violence in low-income urban neighborhoods.

New approaches for modeling between- and within-subject attributes

This study will develop methods and software for modeling both between- and within-subject attributes arising in social network analysis. Traditional statistical models such as regression focus on relationships among within-subject attributes such as age and depression of an individual and do not apply to between-subject interactions in social networks, a setting which has become increasingly popular for patient-centered treatment studies in clinical and translational research. Further, such models also yield biased inference when modeling within-subject attributes within the context of social networks. Although different approaches have been developed to model social network structures, they are all premised upon the traditional within-subject based statistical paradigm, providing only descriptive statistics or inference specific to the specialized social network settings and parameters of interest. A new approach is needed to address the fundamental flaw underlying the conventional statistical models.

The Depression/Hypertension COACH Study

The specific aims of the study are to determine whether COACH is more effective than CAU in treating depression (Aim 1) and HTN (Aim 2); whether improvements in treatment adherence precede reductions in depression and improvement in BP control (Aim 3a), and whether improvements in depression symptoms precede improvements in BP control (Aim3b); if COACH is associated with greater improvements in health-related quality of life than CAU (Aim 4); and to compare the costs associated with each approach (Aim 5).

Etiology of Suicidal Behavior During Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood
