Prior to joining theSTUfaculty, Professor Thomas J. Haslam, PhD, served as Academic Director and Visiting Associate Professor for Suffolk University, Boston, MA, USA, at the [now defunct] Dakar campus in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. His other international appointments include service as an Assistant Professor at Sharjah College, Sharjah, UAE; and as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Policy and Cultural Studies, Chuo University, Hachioji-Shi, Japan. Outside of academia, Haslam has been employed in web development and technical communication. Professor Haslam did his undergraduate work at Saint Joseph’s Universityin Philadelphia, PA, USA; and his graduate studies, including a doctorate degree, at the University of Delaware, Newark, DE, USA. More recently, Haslam earned a Professional Certificate in Data Sciencefrom Harvard University, and related Data Science specialization certificates from Duke University [cert_1], Imperial College London [cert_2], and John Hopkins University[cert_3]. Professor Haslam is convinced that Data Literacy (“Data Fluency” or “Data Acumen”, as it is also known) is now simply part of general literacy: part of the collection of essential skills that college graduates should have for professional life. His current academic work involves supporting data literacy across the curriculum, with a particular focus on non-STEM majors.
