美国哥伦比亚大学海洋地球化学博士学位。现为南方科技大学讲席教授。曾任北京大学讲席教授、美国纽约市立大学皇后分校环境与地球科学院助理教授至终身教授及主任、美国纽约市立大学研究生院化学部终身教授、美国纽约市立大学公共卫生学院终身教授、联合国儿童基金会驻孟加拉国水及环境卫生项目专员。已主持几十项美国和中国政府资助的科研项目。发表论文100多篇,内容涉及海洋地球化学、水文地质学、水化学分析方法、饮用水安全、环境风险与人体健康、以及可持续发展等。在联合国任职期间带领约20人的团队将多年的研究成果应用于孟加拉国地下水资源的开发,解决了200万高砷暴露人口的饮水安全问题。现任或已经担任过国际刊物(Environmental Health Perspective, Journal of Geochemical Exploration, Science of the Total Environment, Science Bulletin)的副主编或专刊主编。2010年当选美国地质学会会士。

简要介绍:1) 不同空间尺度地下水天然污染物成因及对策研究
地下水资源对经济的可持续发展起着举足轻重的作用。在水质方面, 除了面对中国地下水资源人为污染如区域尺度的氮污染、局部金属和有机污染物逐渐加重的现实, 还有地下水受自然地质条件造成的苦咸水、高砷、氟和高碘水等与群众身体健康密切相关的一系列问题。在世界各国,研究表明地下水天然污染物空间分布都具有区域及小尺度非均一性特征。然而这一普遍现象至今未能得到解释。同时,各类地下水污染物在污染场地空间分布的小尺度非均一性一直倍受关注,近来在含水层非均质性如何影响水流和污染物迁移有长足进展。 然而,人为的地下水污染物通常局限于污染场地,空间尺度有限,而地下水天然污染物来自于地层,可以从大尺度(区域)到小尺度(场地)同时探索,更利于加深对自然界的认识。因此, 郑焰团队针对地下水天然污染物分布不同空间尺度的非均一性控制因素的研究,可揭示地下水化学物质迁移释放规律与机理, 为合理利用地下水资源提供科学依据。
2) 地下水回补与水资源可持续性研究
受气候和人类活动(城市化、人口增长、经济发展)的影响,水资源短缺问题严重局限经济发展的可持续性。地下水回补的主要目的为:补充被消耗的地下水资源; 提高地下水水位,防止由于地下水水位大幅度下降导致水质恶化、地面下沉或海水入侵等不良后果; 地表水常含有许多悬浮物、有机质和细菌,不符合供水要求,将地表水通过回补,使之转化为地下水,在其渗漏过程中,经过土壤的过滤和净化作用,使水质得到净化; 对于含盐量过高或含有其他有害物质的地下水,通过抽排劣质水、回灌优质水,可逐渐改善地下水质; 利用地下巨大储蓄空间,调蓄河道部分洪水及非用水季节的径流,实现地表地下水资源高效合理管理和使用。郑焰团队致力与地下水回补风险研究及技术开发, 推动水资源可持续性管理模式的建立。
3) 饮用水安全及个人健康行为关系
世界各国包括美国农村饮用水以地下水源为主。民用井通常不属于国家水质检测范畴, 而地下水天然污染物的普遍存在, 造成严重的人体健康效应。研究表明, 个人健康行为在农村使用民用井的人口中起到关键作用。郑焰团队对于该人群饮用水安全工作多学科的探索, 形成一系列降低暴露风险方案。
